Default Value of a cosmetically challenged S&W 2214?

I was offered a 2214 this morning by a neighbor. Every sharp edge on the frame is worn. There are a few bright spots on the slide, possibly from flecks of blood, and similar spots on both magazines. It has the original box, which is tattered and water stained. I think $225.00 is a gracious amount considering the finish and I have no true need for it. Any thoughts?

Colby, considering the current market, I think that would be a fair price considering the cosmetic challenges. Personally, I might counter offer $200 cash and see where that could get me, especially if I had a supply of 22s on hand.

Finish flaking off the edges isn't unusual for this family of pistols. Even a finish challenged example brings $300+ on GB. I'd give $225 for a 2213 or 2214 without much thought. The magazines routinely sell for more than $75/each.

“Butt ugly” is probably a more accurate description than “cosmetically challenged”, and the firing pin appears to be broken.

I might offer $200 as well, if I was in need of a cheap truck gun, and had pre-sourced a new firing pin. Otherwise, why bother? I'd put the $$ towards something I really needed or wanted.

Butt ugly is not bad, we have all been there. Is a FP that costly?
Sounds like a great camp/truck gun.

The black finish of the 2214 looks especially scruffy when in the condition you describe, ColbyBruce, so even if somebody on Gunbroker might pay three bills for one, I think your $225 for an in-person deal is fair, especially with the two magazines and the fact you don't "need" it. There's a lot to be said, though, for a reliable little pocket .22 that you don't ever have to worry about getting dinged up. I might go $250 or $275 if they really insist, but otherwise, save the bucks for another day.

Gotta admit, though: gun prices these days are through the roof, so who's to say what a reasonable top end is?

EWK Arms makes firing pins, I've got a couple of extras as I own a 422, 622VR, 2213. and 2214. They also sell a threaded barrel nut adapter for suppressor use - one of the reasons why this model is so popular. I can think of worse ways to spend $250 ($225 for the gun and $25 for the firing pin). Almost guarantee that you can get more out of it down the road.

few of my guns would be competitive in a beauty contest. A stable decent finish and mechanical reliability are what I look for. Neither the folks at the gun range, nor those who you potentially defend yourself from are going to notice the spots. And your friends, well, you can tell them that it splattered on there from the last guy who said something you did not like about your pistol.

Thank you for the comments. I took a LEO friend by the neighbor’s last night and he bought it. I had two spare firing pins for my guns, so I gave him one and he will order another for me.

Well, much to my surprise, apparently even cosmetically-challenged 2214s can attract interest and command a higher-than-expected price these days. This auction ended very recently.

I already have one and if you don't want it for $225, put me in touch with the seller. I'll give it a home at that price.

Yikes! Somebody must've dragged it behind a truck, then.

And, the one in the link only came with one mag instead of the two that your seller had.

Oh well, to each his own, and as long as everybody's happy with their purchases, it's all good!

Honestly, I sometimes put a bit of value on the "distraction" it creates for me in the form of a project. I'm never too awfully opposed to a little project gun and ascribe a value as such. I'm in the $200 camp - $75 for the gun and $125 in distraction value. It is nice to have such to simply "unplug" from all this going on around us.
