New to S&W Autos! Picked up and early ('72-'73) Model 39-2
I’m new to S&W automatics but I saw this one for sale (I got it for $400) on a gun-oriented board in my area and I thought I’d take a chance on it. It seems to be in really nice condition and I can’t wait to shoot it!

Looks to have excellent finish. Very good price too! Now the hunt will be for magazines. Getting more difficult to find at a ‘cheap’ price.

I have heard that. It only came with one. It has an "X" shaped metal follower. I'd never seen one like that before.

A real bargain in that condition, and at that price!

Early production Model 39-2 and in what appears to be very good condition. For $400, you did good. Given today's insane market, you did really good!

Don't you mean you stole it for 400! I would of been on that like a hobo on a grilled cheese sandwich. That looks like a beautiful 39-2. Enjoy.

Thanks for the info! How were you able to determine that? All I have to go on is the Standard Catalog.

Great score for that price. The "X" follower mag is correct for that year. Picking up another factory one will set you back $50- $100 bucks.

To the OP. ref. ship date. Go to my Thread on nickel 39s with nic. and blue
controls. Just kind of fit it in with the guns listed and guess.
The X mag you have is correct. Those mags can be pricey. The plastic
follower will work perfectly and not as pricey. Just dont buy any after market mags, Mike

fshjrm, first let me extend full congratulations are in order on getting a good buy on a very nice example of S&W’s ground breaking auto pistol. As for the magazine, of the six magazines for full sized 39 Series pistols I have, only one has the early, metal follower magazine. It came to me an orphan, with post factory nickel plating, from a Forum member here. To be honest, I can’t see any difference in their performance, but I will say that it’s the one that stays with my Franken-Smith 639 most of the time just because it’s “cool.”

BTW, fsjrm, that is exactly twice what I paid for a 1977 vintage 39-2 in perfect condition with 2 plastic follower mags and no box... in 1979!!! If you need confirmation of what a good deal you got, I’d say this would be a good indication.

Beautiful! To my way of thinking, the M39 was one of the best feeling pistols in the hand, ever. I had one just like it in the 70's I bought for an off-duty gun. Wish I had it now. Still looking for a 639 without the winged rear sight.

Thanks for all of the positive comments and information everyone. I took it to the range yesterday and put 50 flawless rounds through it. It’s a sweet shooter for sure and has one of the best trigger re-sets I’ve ever seen.

AH! another auto shooter. No limp wrist syndrome. Glad to see a new generation of shooters that appreciate the mod-39 series.
