odd numbered model 41
Can anyone help me date my model 41 #96xx it has a 7in barrel with brake. The gun is in perfect condition but has a very low sn#. Can anyone help.

According to SCSW, the 41 was introduced in 1957 at SN 3001 and in 1958 relief cuts at the rear of the trigger guard were introduced at SN 16000 (approx.), so your 41 appears to be late '57/early '58.

SCSW = Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th edition was published last year. Many people are still using the 3rd Edition.
The 4th Edition has significant information about guns manufactured after 2005 ~ 2006.

Your M41 was shipped in 1958 with a 7 3/8” barrel. Only 679 pistols were shipped in 1957, the first leaving the factory on 9/17/57, so yours is too high a serial number to be a first year production.
