Briley made a 357Sig barrel for the Shorty 40 and marked it as such. Given the 357Sig generates quite a lot higher pressures is this something that should be done? I might call Smith about it but I think folks here may actually know better on these older guns. Opinions would be appreciated.

When I asked Smith the same question a while back in regards to M&P's they said no problem but 3rd gens are not M&P's so figured I'd ask. I never did the M&P conversion but rather just got a couple of them chambered for 357Sig from the factory. Wouldn't mind being able to shoot a 3rd gen in 357Sig.

It can be done and there are new production .357sig barrels that pop on the GB...

I'm pretty sure there was a thread about it here somewhere???

EDIT! The barrels that some times come up are not fit to your gun spficly... mind you every performance center gun and barrel is hand fit that Briley bushing out front is fit to THAT barrel... THE BARREL THAT YOU BUY MAY JUST DROP IN, BUT NEEDS TO BE CHECKED ALL THEY WAY AROUND!

With all due respect I'm saying that above because I would hate for someone to destroy their beautiful 3rd gen PC Gun..

I sent my entire gun (DPA5906) to Briley when I had a Threaded barrel made for it, just to be sure, I dident want to wreck the gun...

Why would you want to ruin a shorty 40? They were limited run models and onky made like 500 depending on year.

SAAMI pressure specs are not that far apart, the 40S&W is 35,000 PSI as opposed to the 357SIGs 40,000 PSI.

The 357SIG cartridge is perfectly safe to shoot in a Shorty or most firearms that are offered in 40

Back in January of 1993 the Performance Center did build one Shorty 357. I do not know if it was for marketing or testing as the 357SIG was a new cartridge back in that day.

Aside from a serial number and Performance Center logo the pistol is totally unmarked. Customer Service confirms that the serial numbers before and after this pistol are different models making this a run of one firearm

I have no idea how many thousands of rounds of 357SIG have been down the pipe of this beauty so far but it will continue to be used in the years to come

The Shorty 40 is not as rare as some folks would lead you to believe

At least several thousand Shorty 40s were made of the three variations starting in 1992 and the last run ending in the early 2000s

From what I read the values and production discussion tends to break down according to which run is referenced and not as a whole. There were, for example, a fair number of Corvettes produced but a split window 63 type would be accorded a higher value than an 83 "cease fire" type. Or a steel framed Model 39 vs an alloyed.

Perhaps fiddling with the highest production Shorty 40 is not the same as doing it with the lowest?

Unlike Corvettes, the only difference between the 3 variations of Shorty 40 pistols is cosmetic, not performance.

My Mk3 came with a Lew Horton letter limiting its year of production to 500 units. I would call that rare. I have a P229 Sig .357 SAS which is a 900 dollar gun (retail for more now) and a Shorty .40 mk3 and only one of them will increase and maintain its value.

That is not the Sig.
