Default 6906 and 4006 together

Here are my two girls and their mags. (Forgot the one 6906 mag that is in the glove box of the car!) One of the 6906 mags on the right has a metal Model 59 baseplate for conceal-ability.

Practice and quals with the 6906 are done with 115 Standard velocity 9mm. For carry, it will either be Speer Gold Dot 124 +P or 115 +P+ 9BPLE. My last 6906 preferred the 115s over the 124s. When I do my annual qual next week for my HR218, I see which this one likes. Both are awesome rounds.

I'd love to find some Winchester T-Series 147 grainers. They were the best in the Lucky Gunner Labs test.

The 4006 I train with Miwall 180 grain, and carry 180 grain Golden Saber. The Golden Saber was one of the top performing .40s in the same tests,

Anything special that needs to be done to use the metal 59 baseplate?

Nope, just replace the plastic finger rest with the metal. On the finger rest base lock plate, there is a healthy nib that sticks out. Fortunately I had a Model 59 base plate lock plate with short nib. I prefer the metal over the plastic ones used on 915s and 4006 etc.

Very nice sir, I did the same with my Shorty. 40, it amazing how getting rid of that little hook makes it make it much more concealed.. I some time carry it and when I do I have a standard 4006 11rd mag as a back up...

Very nice pistols!
I abandoned 115 grain loads more than a decade ago. The modern 147 grain loads in standard pressure form do very well in my 9mm pistols. I also found that point of aim with my 6946 EDC is spot-on with 147 grain loads. I have used both Federal HST and Winchester Ranger T 147 grain ammo, both were accurate and reliable in my pistols.

The non-subsonic 147s like the T-series are better than the old sub-sonic ones. My general preference in 9mm is the Gold Dot 124 +P. That is what I used in my Glock 19. I had a 669 that liked the 124s, but my last 6906 preferred the 115s. when I get to the range, I'll check again, as I have about 300 rounds of each still.

My 6906 really likes my duty load, Speer Gold Dot 124+. Talking to our range staff, the round was specifically made for shorter barrels like the 6906 and Glock 26

Lucky Gunner did a test of standard 124 Gold Dot +P and short barrel Gold Dot 124 +P. The velocities and expansion from a 3.5" barrel (M&P Compact) were nearly identical. The 3.5" barrel seems to be a sweet spot for performance from the Speer loads.

Years ago when I carried a Model 59 as a duty weapon in the early 80s, I carried the late 70s/ early 80s Speer Lawman 100 grain truncated cone hollow point. They gave about 1240+ FPS from my 4" model 59. That was very snappy for the day.

When I used it as an off duty gun in the late 70s, I loaded it with "Super Vel" 115s. I switched to the Speer Lawman after reading about some Kabooms from Super Vel. (BTW, Super Vel is back in business!)

Contacted Smith & Wesson CS. My 4006 was manufactured May of 1995, and the 6906 is really late production, April of 2000. I thought production of 6906 ceased in 1999!

My 4006 came with the curved grips of the 5906, instead of the straight back grips I ususally see on the 4006 and 410s. Was this an option, or did someone replace them before I got it. The grip is mint.

I think you could order straight or curved factory installed stocks. Of course, it's not too hard for the buyer to swap them either.

Question about your 6906. There are serial #'s on the slide, barrel, and frame on the right side of your pistol. Why are they on yours and and others I've seen don't have them? Special model? Thanks, Jim.

The serial number is on the left side of the frame, the numbers on the right side are control numbers. I believe they identify the specific order or batch.

Practically every time I see three matching, laser applied "control numbers" on the right side of the frame, slide, and barrel, they have been inventory numbers assigned by one of several different California agencies.

For example, my Calif. Dept of Corrections 6906 and my CHP 4006TSW, along with many others I have seen on these pages.

It makes sense as my 4006 was a CHP officer's pistol and I suspect my 6906 was a LEO gun, too.
