Ran through the pawnshop circuit in a town nearby,
and spotted a 3rd Gen in the corner, crowded out by
XDs, Glocks and other mediocrity. "1076, $1199"
Asked how many mags it came with--"three, with the
original box...and a box of ammunition (DoubleTap, 20 rds
200gr hardcast)."
I looked it over. Basically good-VG shape, aside from
some filing of front sight and a couple of dings to rear
corner of slide.
"I'll give it to ya for eight hundred."
"Six hundred?"
"No."
"Six fitty?"
"No."
"Seven seventy five?"
"No."
Ahhh well...out came the plastic.
While yakking, I looked at an old (as in about to start
doing the Safarilaminate Crumble) holster on wall...
"C 91 S&W 1076 PROTOTYPE". He tossed that in,
too.
It's a TFS46XX serial. Mag disconnect is disabled
(slide has slot cut, and white nylon plug is there,
but doesn't impede striker, regardless of plug being
up or down), no text warning on slide. Rear sight
shows a smidge of brass punch residue, so maybe
someone got in there and modified the plug, and
left it in place as a debris blocker...
Front strap is grooved, straight/flat grips, no night sights.
Trigger feels quite nice. DA seems a smidge lighter than
my other 3rd Gens, and SA--the play spring seems to hold
everything together, tighter, than usual. She was dry as
a bone, some CLP may really slick things up.
Slide has a bit of audible rattle, side to side. Up and
down is solid, and barrel doesn't give any wiggle in
bushing. Crown looks good. Bore & chamber, good.
Two mags show "ES"; third says "ES1", with additional
"Accuguide" markings. All three have white followers.
The Accuguide ES1 follower has subtle differences in
grooves on front and sides. The Accuguide ES1 has white
painting lowest third of mag spring, and is noticeably longer
than either of the unpainted ES springs.
Original box end sticker shows Spec Ord 1093, so...April 1991?
Other end of box bears a very aged residue/outline of a peeled
sticker---one of the FBI return/S&W resale labels? Souvenir of
previous pawnshop tour? I suspect the latter...
