Default Model 39-2 Grip Question

This is my latest Smith a 39-2 162XXX range that I am guessing would be early 1970s? Would these grips have been a factory option or purchased later. I am pretty sure 500 was a good price.

Those look like aftermarket goncalo alves to me, could be wrong.

Nice score.

Without grips, $500 would have been an EXCELLENT price.

They are factory. You can find the same type wood on revolvers. There was a stock department at S&W when I was there. There were many variations of wood and styles.

Default Nice price...very nice gun!

Yea.....you got a nice deal. Mine was original with box & docs and was $450 about 2 years ago and I had to pop additional $53 to get the extra original mag off flea-bay.

IF....IF.....IF you have some 9mm ammo, go shoot that gun. They are amazing...decent trigger, mine shoots right where it is supposed to. I like it so much that it "overtook" my Browning Hi-Power as a range day favorite.

If you don't have any 9mm ammo, then another $500 ought to get you a couple boxes in todays ammo market.

Congrats on a swell find. There is literally nothing to be found around here....guns or ammo.

About your grips...I don't know for sure, but your box end label is marked "#12021" in the special features area. This could be a "special order" for the smooth grips. Notice mine has the standard checkered grips and nothing marked in the special features area. Maybe Mike or Jeppo will come along...these guys know more about S&W semi's than I'll ever know.

For $500, even if it came with fake pearl stocks, you got a great deal!!!! I dunno about those stocks, and with the "special features" portion of the box having something written in it... could be the special feature was the substitution of smooth stocks. A letter from Roy Jinks might clear up this question.

Should you shoot this pistol? If a previous owner has shot it, then shoot it, but take really, really good care of it. If it is unfired except for factory test fire... NIB 39-2's are not particularly common today and collectors are paying quite a bit more than $500 for NIB or even LNIB examples.

All I can contribute is that, if you paid $450 for that beautiful example, I hate you.

Hello Mike, really nice set for $500. I have a set of those GA grips on a 39.
Are there any stamps on the back side of the grips? That number on the
end label could be a retail dealers inv. number that would be in his FFL log book. I dont know the code for special features. The top edge of the right panel is flat all the way across. Looks kosher to me.

My 39 sits by the side of my bed - I had one years ago and sold it.
Another came walking up to my table at the gunshow and I bought it for $500 - no box, and it had original grips. Some nice guy on the forum sold me some original pachmeyers.

I'd have bought that one OP for $500 in a heartbeat

Apologize for the poor picture.

Ed

Most times there is a hand written number on the back side in marker by the guy sorting them keeping them a matched pair. Any pics of the back?
