Last few months, from about $350 for a well worn police surplus gun, to about $750+ for ANIB. Here is one I bought from the classifieds for $425:

**SOLD** FOR SALE: S&W 5906

According to Genitron, original suggested retail price was $751.

Smith & Wesson Model 5906 9 mm

My police surplus 5906 was under $400.00. Maybe 2 years ago or so.

Default For me.

Bought one in '00, two 15 rd mags, 300.00 kanadian, about 95%, I know its long ago and far away, but just for info, I then had to spend another 200.00 to kanadianize it with a briley, great gun, I was visiting fellow member Sebago Son in '08 and he donated two 20 rd mags, that made it a greater gun, and more fun.

I also picked up a mint 5906 approximately three years ago for $500. I don’t even think I was fired. And strangely enough I haven’t put a round through it yet. Go for it!

In normal times, a 5906 in very good condition, one magazine, nothing else, would fetch $400. These days, anywhere from $500 to however much a desperate person is willing to pay.

I very much hope nobody is "desperate" to buy a 5906, because there are so many available online. As for people desperate to buy "some kind of 9mm", right-now-TODAY, I would steer them away. First of, the safety-decocker takes getting used to before it becomes intuitive. Second, guns I like don't need the notoriety. I happen to like this one

Out of curiosity, I looked at the completed auctions on gunbroker, and it looks like 5906 in excellent condition are selling for $700~800 with box, papers, and two magazines.

In VG-Exc condition, one magazine and no box, $500~600,which I assume is what the OP is asking. This is my definition of what VG means in the case of a SS duty-type gun (completed auction):

Smith & Wesson Model 5906 Semi Auto 9mm Stainless 15+1 No Reserve - Semi Auto Pistols at GunBroker.com : 887440817

Guns available locally I can hold, examine and nit-pick are worth extra to me personally, but that's just me,

Lots of good old day prices - can we turn back clock or anyone got a time machine?

But today you can find New In Factory Case in the $750-800 range. Well used and looking well used $400 up. Value also depends on how many factory magazines. But I would guess one in 95% condition but without factory case / papers would bring $500-600 and add $20 for each extra magazine.

Agree more value if you can handle and strip to see innerds, plus no shipping charge and may not charge for FFL if you buy from your local shop.

I would agree with that. I have seen a couple truly NIB 5906 examples sell for around $1K in online auction (SMH)

However, this is perhaps a more typical example (completed auction) which quickly exceeded my willingness to spend extra $$ on a 1990-ish 5906 with adjustable sights:

*S&W 5906 SA/DA 9MM EXC COND! - Semi Auto Pistols at GunBroker.com : 891259487

28 bids from about 10 people, and sold for $760. So adding $100 for the condition, and another $100 for the numbered box and papers (), that would put a fair price of a gun with only one magazine someplace around $525~550.

Oddly enough, the lack of a second magazine is not as significant with your 5906 as it would be in a 39 series gun. While single stack mags tend to be hard to find and expensive, the hi-cap mags are apparently more easily found and less expensive. Also there are some good aftermarket double stack mags available, but no such single stackers.

I haven’t seen what you think it will cost you, but if I were looking for one, I’d jump on $500 or less, and think about a nice one for a little more. The final decision of course must rest with you.

Default Just curious

Hi there, you say 39 mags are pricey, I have a great 39-2 that is kanadianized with a dozen mags, what would be a fair price per mag if I sold them with the gun, up here you must be grandfathered to have a 4 inch but at 4 1/8th inch it is restricted and sellable, thanks for bringing this up.

Dasnake, we’re hijacking a thread here, but since you asked, they’re bringing anywhere from $50-60 or more around here. I just got one on Gun Broker for $30+HIS and felt like I’d hit the lottery. By the way, dasnake, are those Bailey barrels still available up there in the Great White North?
Apologies to the OP and now back to his topic... I stand by my previous estimate that $500 for just the gun with one magazine is an attractive price.

I bought a nice clean adjustable sight 5906 in 2010 on the big auction site, fired quite a bit but very well taken care of. Came with 8 15rd mags, box, Galco paddle holster and dual mag pouch for $450 shipped. I would expect that prices have gone up accordingly in the last 10 years.
It's been a great gun, only failure was a chipped extractor nose which caused ejection jams, so it made a trip to S&W for a new one, and got an action job while there.

They are nice guns. Right now $500 would be a good deal for a good condition shooter.

Got to get the gun in hand today. Not a Mark on it. So far, I really like the way it looks, and feels.
Should be able to shoot it next week.
I appreciate the information I got from the folks that replied. This forum is a great place.

If I remember correctly, spare recoil and mag springs are pretty readily available for the5906’s....

Great find! Just be prepared for someone asking you if you are interested in selling it every time you take it to the range.

I picked up one today. A gen1 gen3 if you will. Hooked trigger guard, adjustable sights, and the all stainless hammer, sear and trigger. Someone mentioned about being old well this was probably made when I was 25 (1990).

It was $525 at my LGS. He had 2 there. One the gen1 and the other a gen3 (MIM parts). It came with one LE marked mag and Hogue grips. Those thick things were quickly replaced with a straight back delrin I had from my 4006tsw.

I ordered some more mags and a spring kit. Cleaned all the preservative oil off it and just admired for now. Tried to post a pic but no luck. Anyway now I’m in the 5906 club

We're all over the place I guess. The last day of last year I bought a 95% 5906TSW with 5 mags, box and papers for $550. It comes up 2002 and it is full of those pesky MIM parts. All of the MIM parts I have ever had are defective. They absolutely refuse to break like everyone says they will.

I picked one up NIB in 2019 for $800 plus tax, shipping and transfer. I had been looking for weeks, when this one came along.

Never thought my first duty gun purchased new in the late 80's would some day be worth 2+ times what I paid for it. Still looks new. Great gun.

With MIM the problem isn't the process, it's the execution. (As with anything manufactured) S&W MIM parts are good to go.

I agree. My S&W 6946 has MIM parts. It has been reliable and the trigger pull is consistent and very smooth, much smoother than the forged and machined steel parts in my Model 439.

Meg-Gar makes a 15rd and a 17rd. New OEM mags are available, as are LEO marked used ones.

I picked up a 5906 and a 5946 "NOS". 735 and 675 respectively. They both came with 1 10rd mag. But it was easy to get plenty of full capacity mags.

Thanks for that, BT! It's the best description I've ever seen about the tempest in the MIM teapot!

Ah, you know my good friend Drew. I love the 5906 but I got rid of it, a 915, and a nickel 59 when I started buying some of the M&P series. I should have kept all of them. I haven't had to Kanadianize anything yet. I'm glad ya'll took this awful cold weather back. It was 82* here today and I got a lot done outside. If you ever get down South look me up.
