Default Need assitance with a model 39 barrel

I'm new to the forum, so please bear with me if I mess up. A few years ago I bought a 39-2 from someone, no box or papers, in really good shape. The only question I had about it was it had a five inch barrel on it, so it protruded another inch past the bushing. It appears to be stainless, and has the "9 mm" markings on the top. I have looked in the S&W catalog and can't find anywhere a 39 was made with a barrel this length. I never shot it, but it appears to function fine. I was going to sell the barrel on GB or Ebay as I have already replaced it with a four incher, but I wasn't sure what to say it was made for. According to what I have found, even the model 59's were four inch barrels except for a few in .38 caliber that were five inches. I also found that Smith made a model 39 for the navy called "hushpuppies" where the barrel extended an extra inch, but were threaded for a suppressor. This one is smooth all the way. Does anyone recognize what I have or what gun this barrel was originally made for?
Thanks!

Hi, thf1!

Welcome to the forum!

I also have one of those 5" barrels.
Unfortunately, I got it used and I have never found out who made it.
I think it is aftermarket.

How much do you want for it?

John

Hi John, Thanks for the welcome! I sold it yesterday to the first guy that responded to my thread for $75.00. The more I thought about it, the more I think you are right that it was an aftermarket item. The "9 mm" engraved on the top of the barrel appeared to be identical to the original Smith typeface. That was what made me believe it was an original Smith & Wesson item. Plus it seemed to be a pretty good quality barrel. The rifling also seemed to have a slightly tighter twist to it than my other 39 barrels do.

At least I know now that it wasn't a one of a kind! Thanks for responding!!

There was a Model 52... kind of that was sold on Gunbroker a handful of months back. It may have simply been a slide and barrel and not a whole 52, but the bottom line is that it was 9mm chambered and it was unfinished, it looked almost like someone at the S&W plant was goofing around on their own time...?

It's not like you could simply put a new slide and barrel on a 52 frame and it would start shooting 9mm just like that, but the bottom line is that this particular group of parts did indeed include a 9mm chambered full five-inch barrel.

How about that! At one time I wondered if this could be part of a conversion kit, (like the .22's for 1911's) but I was never able to find anything like that. The guy that I bought it from told me that Smith had made the barrels to improve accuracy on these guns, but I could never find any thing to document that either. Since I never shot it, I couldn't say if it really made any difference or not. Thanks for the reply!

A barrel like that could probably make a good suppressor platform.

Default Need assitance with a model 39 barrel

My first thought was it was a Canadian legal model as they have minimum barrel requirements. No expert on this model though by any means just a thought. They have a minimum allowance of greater than 105mm or 4.134 inches but I doubt they would have made it 5" so most likely not the answer.

I'm no expert on these guns by any means, but the suppressor idea makes the most sense. The gentleman that bought this from me said that he was toying with the idea of making a clone hushpuppy. For those not familiar, the hushpuppy was used during the Vietnam war to "correct" the sentry dogs at the fences of the enemy lines. According to what I found on this, they consisted of the Model 39, a suppressor, a folding stock and a slide lock due to the fact that the slide made quite a racket itself when it cycled. The lock kept the slide from moving after the shot was fired, and therefore made the gun that much more quiet.
Just fun things to know and tell!

Because the barrel must move and tilt during function, the addition of a heavy can (suppressor) to the front of the barrel can create function problems.
The slide lock wasn't there just to stop slide noise. It was also there to convert the pistol into a single shot (which is what it would have been anyway with the can causing malfunctions).

That make perfect sense. I guess if you hang that much weight off the end of something that supposedly was pretty well balanced leaving the factory, you can expect to have some kind of problems!

Exclamation Smith & Wesson model 39-2 and 59

Does anybody have information about barrels that are longer than 4 inches? I inherited these firearms from my father but they are prohibited in Canada. If I can get a barrel that is longer than 4 inches I can have the classification changed to restricted.

If the second generation of the 39 series weren’t over 30 years out of production, the likelihood of such barrels being readily available aftermarket would be much greater... as it is, I’ve had very poor success finding any new aftermarket parts for them... they’re reaching collector status.

So I’ll likely need to have them deactivated and put into shadow boxes as display pieces. My only other option is to have them destroyed or sell somehow. I’ve had no luck finding any aftermarket barrels or anybody to make custom barrels.

If you decide to have them deactivated or destroyed, please don't tell us. These times we are living in are depressing enough.

If it was up to me I would not do any of that. My dad had a prohibited license but I’m not allowed to have them grandfathered to me unless they are from like the early 1930’s or 40’s. I love both of these firearms as they have sentimental value to me. But it seems the decision will be out of my hands. Can’t say I’ve ever been heart broken over an item before. So hopefully it works out. I sent an email to barsto hopefully they can help me out.

I don't pretend to know Canadian law but..... If it is possible and you decide to destroy the weapons.

May I respectfully suggest that you break them up for parts.

There is a decent amount of money in older collector parts to keep the pistols in the U.S. running.

Slides, hammers. trigger bars, extractors and other parts can bring a decent penny.

I will look into options. I’m not sure if I can sell them whole outside of my country. I can however sell them whole as long as it’s somebody with a prohibited license as a buyer. It would make more sense to part them out. But I will see if that’s possible first. I will most likely post for sale on this forum if I am able to.

First, welcome to the S&W Forums.

Second, please do not have you pistol destroyed. I know Canada has a silly law that requires handguns to have a barrel of not less than 105mm, that's 4 and 67/500ths of an inch for us in the U.S. Finding a barrel for a S&W metal receiver 9mm pistol longer than 4 inches is going to be very difficult, if not impossible. If it proves to be impossible, please, please, please sell it to someone with a license for these "prohibited" handguns. If you can't find a buyer, part it out, but don't just have it turned into scrap metal.

It would be nice if you had close family in the states who could take possession for you to enjoy while you're down here visiting. And I hear Florida is a popular destination if retirement isn't too far in the future.
All for a measly .134"!!!
Think happy thoughts my friend.

It’s ridiculous that most Canadians can’t inherit post 1946 firearms with “short” barrels. I was lucky enough to be grandfathered in 1995 when they passed that set of laws (American brethren, be warned) so I can own them but can’t leave them to my kids either. If you’re going to sell any prohib’s, I suggest you try canadiangunnutz.com as there is a specific classified section there just for 12(x) (Prohibited) status guns.

Secondly, what guns do you have that you want changed to restricted?
Thirdly, I've gone this route with a 39-2 and a 5906, I used briley barrels made for each, I am a briley fan and I also redid my gold cup with a briley also, my gunny is a master at doing this, froggie has asked about the barrel situation up here in rathole north and my gunny wasn't in today.
Fourthly if you want pm me about this situation, but please keep your guns to yourself up here and please do not destroy them.

Send me a pm as I know a gunsmith that can convert them to restricted for you. It's not the gent dasnake mentioned. This fellow has very quick turnaround time. I owned a Model 59 that he had converted and he did a nice job.

maybe I am ignorant about these things, but what would be wrong having a .100" ring welded to the end of the barrel? Like a welded flash hider on a 14.5" AR barrel to make it 16"+ a wee bit. Then get the local RCMP gents to ceriify it is 4.1" long?
