New to me, Model 4546
It happened again, the wife might get mad but I rescued another one. 4546 with the box and paperwork. I’m thinking this thing may be unfired.

I found these last two at a Cabelas near me. Apparently they bought a whole collection, mostly 3rd Gen semi autos, from a family that had lost a loved one. The family brought the collection to Cabelas and they bought the whole lot.I really want a 1086 that they have but I can’t make myself pay what they are asking for it without the box and goodies.I don’t have any other 10mm’s or ammo at this time anyway so it might be a blessing.

The 4546 has been scarce lately, took me a couple of years looking and I found one a couple of months ago. I think around 450 were produced.

While significant quantities of Commander length 4586s were sold to police departments I've not heard of any government purchases of 4546s and service pistol size DAO 3rd generation pistols did not sell well on the civilian market. Consequently, the 450 produced number Aegis posted is pretty close to correct.`I wonder if there was even a second production run?
Since I liked target shooting with my revolvers DA and like casting and reloading .45 bullets I wanted a 4546. After I gave up hunting for a 4546 I settled for a new 4586. With night sights it was $600 & tax in 1996. At a gun show a few years later I traded a surplus 4046 that I bought for $299 out the door and $25 for a 4546. Not long after that there were police surplus 4586s in the Shotgun News for under $300, $259 to $279 if memory serves. By then 4546s had been recognized as scarce collector items. It seems I have the price of one tied up in the other and vise versa. So it goes.
Both have been 100% reliable. Being large and heavy makes them pleasant to fire.
By the way, there were also police surplus sales of 1086s. Mine was $300 in a gun store in 1996. We called that store the cop shop because it sold uniforms and other gear and sold guns to police departments. Some of the surplus guns they sold were traded in directly to them and some came from the wholesale market. I do wish I'd bought one of their $170 standard or light barrel Model 64 .38 Specials but I bought a early 1950s .38 M&P shortly before they got the Model 64s so I wasn't ready to spend more on another .38.

Wow! Thanks for the info man, I appreciate it. After finding that 4566 with the melonite finish a few days ago, getting home and figuring out how many were produced, I went back armed with the spreadsheet skjos put together here and bought this 4546. I think I am done for a few weeks. And to think, this whole sickness started with buying a $300 4043 beater last week .
