I would prefer the 4040.

The 4013/4014 is bigger (single stack but bigger frame if it's an old one and double stack if it's a newer one).

I believe that it would be hard to find additional magazines for the single-stack 4013/4014.

The 4040 is a .40 S&W version of the 3913NL but with a Hogue rubber grip.

That said, I'm confused by the "gold and matte" bit. Of the handful of 4040s that I have seen in the ferrous flesh, none has been two-tone. Could it be an aftermarket finish or did it come that way from the factory? I also, if memory serves, have not seen any mention of 4040 two-tone finish in the S & W catalogs of the period.

Well, I will tell you the 4014 is fairly hard to come by since, according to the S&W Historian, there were only 550 units produced. (Factory Letter on 4014)

As for magazines, you can pick them up from Midway USA (4014 at Midway)although they are presently on backorder. You can also pick them up, if you keep your eyes open, at local gun shops or gun shows.

I got a 4040pd a couple months ago and really like it. Takes the same leather as my 59xx pistols. I believe it was a trade-in by a peace officer because it has a lot of holster wear, but appears pristine internally. Although the gun was produced in small numbers, I have had no problem finding extra mags on the net. I have no experience with the 4014, but I imagine it is a fine pistol as well.

4040 in between a 457 & 908.
