I recently sold one of my Ruger MKIIs via consignment. If I use the funds to buy another firearm the shop waives the consignment fee. I really don’t need another gun, in fact I’m trying to reduce my collection, but this Model 41 caught my eye. It seems to be in very good condition, just in need of a decent cleaning. I just wanted to get some opinions on it. The price seems good but I have not been in the buying market for quite a while. I know issues can vary gun to gun but wondered how examples from this time seemed to be in general. The serial number puts it at a 1991/1992 production. It comes with the box and three magazines.





I’ve got a Model 41 currently that I bought new in 2009. I has a threaded Clark barrel and I use it as a suppressor host. Some ammo functions erratically in mine but CCI SV works 100%. It’s probably my favorite gun to shoot out of about 100.

I’d be very tempted.

Lay $750 on the counter and see if they'll bite. Nevertheless, $795 in my neck of the woods for the ensemble you describe is a VERY good price. I certainly would snap it up if it were me, even if I already had a model 41.

Yeah, I’ll probably just get it. The credit from the Ruger sale is $325 so it will be a pretty reasonable amount of extra cash out of pocket. I’ve got a few more Rugers up for sale too so hopefully they’ll sell soon to cover the rest of the cost. I just wish ammo was readily available. I’m going to want to shoot it. I’m already going through withdrawal and don’t want to shoot up my stock of rounds.

I would buy that in an instant. That was the going price about 10 years ago around here.

I own a Model 41 that was given to my father in 2005 when he retired from S&W. The Model 41 was the first handgun my father worked on when he moved to R&D. The gun we received was very problematic: constant jamming in the barrel and clip feed, as well as jammed ejections. My Dad took the gun apart and basically formed the opinion that the newer Model 41's were trash compared to the earlier Model 41's. I would be very skeptical about buying a late-Model 41 based on my experience; if you can cycle a couple clips without jamming, then it's a keeper!

Buy, buy, buy at that price.

What was his delineation for newer vs earlier examples? Is there a year where the lemons began? My 2009 Model 41 has been pretty good.

Good upgrade from the Ruger. My later model needed a recoil spring change to become 100% reliable. Very accurate and muck better trigger than the Ruger

I would be on it at that price. I rarely seem them under 1000 now.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Ruger fan but I’ve got about 13 MKIIs. Several are exact duplicates of the variations so I’m thinning that herd a bit. These are some of them. I’ve added and deleted a few since this photo.



At 50 yards I can outshoot my current Model 41 with my MKII fully customized by Clark.

If that model 41 is as nice as it appears in the photos provided, you should already own it by now! JMHO.

I should be so lucky... Down Under a model 41 will set you back at least US$1100. If you can find one...

It's a great gun at a great price.

I'd only ask yourself, are you going to use it, or does that particular one fit a collection somehow? You've already got a 41, and frankly one that looks like a much more fun gun to shoot (cans and optics are the truth on 22 autos). If you'd like a second one to have as an irons only example, I think you'll be thrilled with the price. Otherwise, I'm not really a fan of having duplicates, especially if the one I'm considering buying is a less capable variant of a favorite.

I’ve got lots of duplicates that I’m trying to thin out and I’m only buying stuff at this point that I’ll actually shoot. Assuming ammo becomes readily available I think I’d shoot this one.

I really like your little suppressed number on the left. Almost exactly how I want to set up mine when I finally pull the trigger on it.

That was my dream .22LR suppressor pistol host: Ruger MKII frame & Tactical Solutions upper. Later I had a full stainless KMK578 MKII machined for a host and preferred it (on the right). Finally I set up the Model 41 and it’s my favorite. I do still enjoy the MKIIs a lot though I have considered selling the Tactical Solutions one. It doesn’t get shot much any more.

I picked it up yesterday. After getting it home for a better look it’s in really good shape. It’s been shot but no significant wear. The shop told me the seller was originally asking $1100 and had just dropped the price.

Comparing it to my 2009 Model 41, this one definitely has a more “old school” feel: high polish bluing vs matte, wood grips vs laminate wood, roll marks vs laser etching. I’ll try to get some better photos later. Now I need to get out to shoot it...

Better photos. Hopefully they show the subtle differences: polished bluing vs matte finish on the frame, roll marks vs laser engraving, wood vs laminate grips. I didn't realize the older ones had an extension off the safety lever that stopped the slide from coming back when it's engaged.

You know, it's been over 10 years since my father and I broke down the Model 41 we had and went through it so I don't remember many of the fine details. There were many changes made to the newer Model 41's (such as the one I have) according to my father -- he said he that production cost-cutting was a major contributor. He pointed out a glaring error on the slide -- something with the grooves having been changed. To sum up my father's opinion of what he saw is that the newer models are not the same gun as the older model, which my father worked on for the Model 41 heavy barrel project. Production on the original Model 41 ended in 1960. The weapon, which I believe is the current model, was reintroduced in 1969.

The older ones do look nice with the bluing and roll stamps rather than laser etched. I have some of both.
