Default Old S&W model 39 age?


I inherited a S&W Model 39. The ONLY number I see is on the left side of the slide 68852. Can anybody help me date this gun??? Its in excellent condition and is a very nice shooter.

Probably mid-1966 but only an archive letter can tell you for sure. Do you have any history on the gun?

Hello new 39 owner and welcome. Kevin sounds spot on. Blue or nic.?
Take it out and shoot it. Just load the chamber from a full mag.
Do not load the chamber and close the slide. Extractor does not like that.

Oh, I agree! Most semi-automatic weapons do not like that, it has the potential to damage and ultimately break the extractor hook.

Old? Wait a minute, a 39 was my first semi auto and I'm not that old! On second thought, i bought it in 1960. Guess I am that old.
