Default Pre- Model 39 9mm

I am trying to get info on this gun. A model 39, but no model number on the gun, just a serial number 1160. Compared to a different 39, different long, wide, extractor, different shape safety, and different shape hammer. Box label says S&W semi-automatic 9mm. No model number.

How rare is this? NIB value?

You have what many people call a "pre Model 39." S&W did not assign model numbers until 1957 and your gun was probably shipped in 1955. They aren't extremely rare.

Mr. ccnv, Kevin nailed the probable ship date. Differences with later mod-39s, I would suggest a search. Type in "Seductive power of 39s."
You will rec five pages of posts. If you are looking to buy or sell, take your time and educate yourself. Pls send a PM to any of the guys who may reply to your post. They will give you the straight Poop on the gun.
The term "rare" is tough to define just like value. best, Mike

I have 1173. Yours might be in the same batch that was delivered to the military PX system (for sale on military bases, not military trials/use). A SWHF letter will give this level of information. Yours is an early pre-39 (they started at 1001) and many of these had interesting destinations from the factory.
