Model 52 and California Law
In 2021 is there an exemption for a Model 52 which would make it OK to buy out of state and have it sent to a CA FFL?

There are two exemptions to the roster that come into play.
The first one is the Olympic Competition Pistol exemption list, which has the 52-1 and 52-2 pistols listed. This is a lesser known roster exemption and many CA FFL's do not even know of it's existence, so print off that listing Delta Rose furnished, to have it handy to show to an LGS.
The 2nd exemption is the C&R exemption. The 52 "no-dash" is not on the Olympic exemption list, but it's production years firmly qualify it for C&R due to age.
The CA DROS online system has a transaction selection for Olympic Pistols sales and another for C&R's.
Also note... CA's definition of an age based C&R is slightly different than Federal.
The BATF states that to qualify for the C&R age criteria, a firearm has to be at least 50 years prior to the current date.
CA law states that to meet the C&R age criteria exemption, it must be over 50 years old.

Gun hacker is right, the 52-1 & 52-2 are on the Olympic exempt pistol list in CA, the model 41 is also on that list.

I've had a C&R FFL for about 20 years and a CA COE for about 10 years. It wasn't so long ago that CA gun stores summarily disregarded their use or that C&R handguns that are Oly or C&R eligible need not be on the roster, however things have gotten better. Still, it pays to be prepared AND be nice about it when dealing with a store that may not be up to speed.
If you have a LGS that you've routinely used asking face to face, not over the phone, is best. Bring paperwork but be careful how you "educate". If you hit any resistance, may be best to not push it and go to another store. Or, leave the info, or let them figure it out on their own. Some folks like to believe they've decided on their own.
The LGS wants to make $$$, but they also know CA DOJ will sweat them if the make a mistake. Go easy, channel a little "Columbo" and it may help if you run into a little resistance.
As previously mentioned, C&R status is most often had by age however some guns are specifically listed as C&R in the ATF book. Demonstrating that the gun in question is of that model should be sufficient.

^^^^ Wise words about treading lightly with an LGS, many of them easily take offense at "someone" trying to "tell them their business".
I too have had a C&R FFL for over 20 years, and a COE in the last 10.
Whenever I encountered an unwillingness at an LGS, I subscribed to the adage "never try to teach a pig to sing, it only wastes your time and annoys the pig"... and I moved on to another LGS.
Once I found one willing to play, I made sure that I built up a customer relationship, by not limiting business with them to C&R transactions.

Thanks for that link. I suppose it might not hurt to inquire at CA DOJ before ordering a 52, either no dash or -1 or -2. I have spoken in person to CA DOJ and found the people who talk on the phone nice enough and informative as well.
