Default Model 639

S&W 639.jpg

my newest oldie but goodie . what a pleasure to shoot * no surprise it was issued to Navy Seals back in the day. These days with ammo prices/scarcity am getting away from .45 auto. Mostly 9mm , .22 , 38sp-357 for me . could easily be my everyday carry piece .

At least to me you got lucky . I like the adjustable rear sights , but mine came with fixed sights . I got lucky and got a complete 3906 slide and put it on mine , now I have an adjustable rear .

Mine is very accurate and eats anything , but it is partial to 124gr . Hope you got at least 2 mags with it , hopefully originals .

The steel and stainless steel x39 pistols are a bit heavy, but will also last forever. That's a sweet looking 639.

Do you mind giving us a ballpark figure on what you paid for it? A shop in town has one now, 2 mags, in pretty good shape. He wants almost $850 for it.

While waiting for the OP’s response, I’ll mention that I bought a 639 via Gun Broker just about a year ago. It had the “fixed” sights and only one magazine and showed just a little cosmetic damage. At that point I paid right at $500 with shipping, transfer and all and wondered whether I had overpaid. Today I would expect to pay up to $100 or so more, then have to add to that for additional mag(s) and adjustable sights. If your LGS has any wiggle room at all on that price, and if it has adjustable sights, that’s not totally out of line IMHO.

It’s a sellers’ market for all guns right now and predictably nines are at the top of many people’s want lists. The 1st through 3rd Gen 39/59 series were the last classic metal guns before Smith gave in to the plastic revolution, so they are more desirable to many. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be improving in the foreseeable future.

I paid $712 shipping included. Very solid 639 with 3 mags in excellent shape, a darn accurate smooth shooter !
Purchased on GB

I would say that with the finned adjustable sights and three mags, it could make a great carry gun. With all that steel in it, it’s not a lightweight. You’ll need a good holster for it... depending on what I’m wearing and where I’m going, I like the plain duty style with thumb snap to carry it on my belt, but there are some good shoulder holsters out there too. I bought one of each.

I don’t know how you feel about basic gun care as it spills over into minor gunsmithing, but the 39 series thrives on just a little care... you’ll probably be able to pass it on to a grandchild, even though it’s already three decades old. I bought one of those “repair parts kits” to make sure I could replace anything that wears out, but so far all I’ve replaced was a sear depressor lever so the lower frame would play well with different slides. I’ll see if I can post a picture of my Franken-Smith. It’s shown with a 439 and a 915 slide, both of which work well on it.

Sorry for showing this photo again, but this one is just for looking at and taking space in the top of the safe! Take care!

That’s OK, storyman. We need to have pictures like that around so we can remember where our guns started, or maybe what they should look like. BTW, I don’t see many examples of the 639 that don’t have the ambi safety. That’s a stripped down, all business example. I’d have a hard time not shooting it though!

Well, I was hoping that I would be able to pick up another slide on GB today... one with the high fin adjustable sights. It was part of one of those “parts kits” from guns torn down for destruction and stayed reasonable until the last day or so then went crazy. My Franken-Smith 639 has a couple of extra slides already, so it was too hard to justify that much money just for some different sights.

Nice acquisition! I still need to shoot my 539 for the first time. It has been just pining away on the top shelf of the safe, sitting next to an unfired nickel 559 cousin. It just seems that I reach for my BHP every time I want to shoot 9mm.

Talking 639

Very Nice !
had mine to the range today again flawlesly running hollow point & FMJ . i used all three mags and looked on bottom of two mags & realized they were in fact original S&W , making my find an even greater catch *
with ammo prices the way they are i may have to put her back in the vault and carry my S&W M&P .22 compact .
OK, go ahead....insert laughter here

sorry i parted with my old BHP (tangent sights) years ago,but oh well can't keep em all.
