Default Early 39, four digit Sn.

Bought an early, four digit mod-39, Sn. 8546.
Its the highest four digit Sn. I have seen. Anybody seen any higher? Kind of a weird one in that it has a pre-39 frame.
And MODEL 39, hand stamped under the Sn., but is not square.
Best, Mike

If you mean a short tang and/or short safety I think you find a mix of these features in this SN range.

Yes, the frame has the short tang. The slide has the long de-cocker and serrations under it. The mags? What the heck do you think came with the gun when new? thanks, Mike

I went back and looked at the other thread. I agree that one of the 3 mags is correct.

Yes, 9MM/S&W long floor plate with the X follower. When did the flat followers stop being used? This was to early for the military cut out
mags?

I think the answer is impossible to determine, especially at this late date. S&W wasn't even consistent with the frames so it stands to reason that the magazines overlapped. And now, with pistols passing through multiple hands, the magazines, boxes, cleaning kits, papers get switched around.

Kevin, logic is indisputable. Does anyone know of eng. changes that would have approved and distributed? Somebody changed the mags.

I don't think a magazine change warranted a formal engineering change.
