Tell me where that “VALUE LINE” pistol is. I will buy it. If you really meant 945 that is.

Insane prices. Even before the pandemic/panic, firearms and ammo at gun shows around here were priced as high as or higher than what you could get at your local gun shop and a lot higher than what you could get from online retailers.

...and that is one of the numerous reasons that I do not go to gun shows.

So many guns become "rare" when they get to a gun show. And usually the reason is, "they don't make them anymore".

Wow those prices are pretty steep. Gunshows and Gunbroker will often make one go broke.

I guess I’m lucky as I’ve gotten many good deals at gun shows over the years, though admittedly not lately, as I haven’t gone to any.
I go mainly to support the promoters, so I won’t cry when the shows are gone.

And the gun you're trying to trade is common, worthless junk.
I'll stop now, I don't need another ding.

The 5906TSW is a bit high, but the 5903 seems to be in the ball park.

Like any show, there are those who shoot for the moon. But there were also several appropriately priced examples as well. You just have to find them. I found a few this weekend.

I had as good a time as I’ve had in last 30 years of going. Glad prices are steadily climbing. If they start going down look out we’re in trouble. I spent over 10 k . If you can’t find humor in gun shows you do not need to go it’ll keep isles less cluttered. Vendors like my self don’t give a **** What you paid for a gun in 1964 but we just smile and listen to your story anyway.

$850 for that gun is a very good deal. The 945 is a performance center gun and one of the finest Smiths ever made. It is not part of the value line. But did I miss the joke?

I work gun shows for a few FFL’s. One guy always prices his guns reasonably, & has been around for decades. He had a new Glock priced at $600. Another FFL stopped by on setup day, & told him he gets $670 for the same gun all day long. Basically he was telling him to raise his price so he wouldn’t lose sales to my boss. But my boss told him “I’m making good $ selling it at $600, & there’s no reason to rape the customers”. But sadly that’s the attitude of the FFL’s today. Let’s make up for the last 4 years which were slow. And the ammo vendors are the worst scum of the earth. While their costs have gone up 10%-15% max, they have doubled, or even tripled their selling prices. Glad I have enough. GARY

Were 4526s really that rare? $2000+ for a used one with a 645 mag seems beyond ridiculous.

Really sorry I missed Tulsa this year - family issues in need of attention. Tulsa requires some serious walking and hunting in order to find good stuff. There are those that overcharge and are happy putting the same guns out year after year and those who are moving product. I have a few recent gun new one that will be posted soon, a few from GB who now charges tax FTR and others from private party. Tulsa for me is a learning and social experience. If you want to buy there it is all about the hunt.

Attitudes like this are why people stop going to gun shows.
To paraphrase you,
Quote:
Buyers like myself don’t give a **** that this gun was owned by Audie Murphy himself, but we just smile and listen to your story anyway.
|
We then walk away and post on gun forums that you're a scam artist.
I understand that there is a significant cost to setting up a table at a gun show beyond whatever the fee is. There's a lot of labor involved in setting those tables up, paying staff, loading inventory, and even lost sales if you close your shop. That's not a problem, but attitude is.

Prices for vintage S&W automatics at gunshows are driven by three factors. The chiefest is the environment we're in right now. Panic buying is not what it was but its influence still lingers and gun sellers aren't the most ethical souls so gouging and 'whatever the market will bear' are current sales philosophy. Can't blame them, if people are willing to pay 700-bucks for a gun I was selling last year for 350, I'd not refuse their Ben Franklin 100-series trading cards. Second is there is a growing affinity for old-school all-metal guns. Polymer framed guns are here to stay as mainline current commercial products but there is a love for the old school guns and S&W optimizes these pistols. Nothing like that cold metal heavy feel in your hand especially when its a big-bore 45 or 10mm. Final factor is gunshow overhead. A dealer pays about 100-bucks per table. Most dealers have three or four tables, sometimes more. So most dealers are in the hole several hundred if not around a thousand or more before the first person walks in. So they have to recoup their attendance overhead. I go to gunshows nowadays to shop for parts and accessories. Ammo and guns are just too insane right now. Being first in to scarf up a deal is no longer the case as the dealers trade amongst themselves before the first customer comes in. Never expect a deal at a gunshow unless its a private seller that doesn't know what they have.

Adds to the story of this being one of the few to survive the great flood of nineteen dickety two. We had to say dickety back then because the Kaiser had stolen our word for twenty. Now, where was I, oh, yes, this is one of the few to survive the great flood and is now very rare...
