That's the barrel for shooting tracer rounds. The gaps allow the tracer material air space to ignite just before the bullet leaves the barrel, giving a full length tracer path all the way from barrel to target.

I'm going to ask the obvious question. Did you push a patch through to see if its just "chips"!

It was dirty, but no chips.

Many on this forum advocate relining 41 barrels. Looks like a good candidate.

This is a brand new barrel that came on a brand new 41 I bought back in the last part of April at a very crowded and very busy gun store. I just looked it over without looking into the muzzle. Anyway I took it home and didn't bother with it until a few weeks later, so I cleaned it and that's when I noticed the flaws in the barrel. I returned it to S & W with a note telling about the flaws, which they completely ignored and sent it back with some non sense bogus maintenance they said they performed on it. I sent it back last week and told them to look at the barrel interior and that it should be replaced. Now I'll wait to see if they replace it like they should have done the first time it went in. If there was QC at S & W this barrel would never have passed.

I do believe that a comparison between Remington and the current Smith & Wesson is not that far off if they keep going the way they are going. Maybe a Ruger or CZ rescuing and straightening this mess out once and for all.

That's outrageous, no excuse for dismissing something so obvious! I wish you better luck second go-round.

I had a new PC pistol where the barrel laser etching was crooked and had several dings in it. S&W replaced it and the replacement barrel had machine marks in every groove of the rail. QC is non existent at S&W on the 41. Good luck.

Did you send it back and tell them about the machine marks? To date I have not received any response from S & W concerning what they are going to do with the barrel I sent back. I will say this if they send it back to me and the barrel was not replaced with one that is sat. I will keep sending it back until the defect is corrected.

Based on the last two or three guns I bought, and now after seeing your Model 41, which is their top-shelf target pistol, I am beginning to wonder if ANYONE at S&W knows what a barrel is supposed to look like. All they would have to do is look at one of their guns made 40-50 years ago and that would give them a pretty good idea. 60-70 years ago… even better!

Received message from FEDEX this morning that my 41 is on the way back and should be here early next week. I called S & W C S to make sure they replaced the defected barrel and got a scare when the lady told me they replaced the laser. I told her the pistol didn't have a laser and the barrel needed replaced, so she checked with the shop and was told the barrel was replaced. Anyway I will have to wait until it gets here to be sure of what was done. Will update again when I receive it.

Received my 41 back today. To make this short the barrel was not replaced. Sent it back by FEDEX this afternoon after speaking with a manager at S & W and sending him pictures. He said he would see that the barrel gets replaced. I will update when ever I get it back. Keep in mind this is the third trip back to S & W.

Just guessing here, but is it possible they did change the barrel but that most/all of them have the same issue?

Default Barrel Replacement Update

Rcvd. 41 back today. Barrel was replaced for sure this time. One problem, two of the four plug screws were missing. I called S & W CS just now concerning the missing screws and was assured they would be sent to me and should be received in about ten days. New barrel does look good. They must have also adjusted the trigger pull cause when I sent it in the pull was 2-1/2 lbs. and now it is 1-3/4 lbs.. I don't mind that at all. It took three trips back to S & W to get the barrel replaced, but it was worth it. Anyway while I was waiting on the 41 to come back I bought me a Colt Woodsman Match Target Third Series and I'm real happy with it. I do believe my new S & W firearms buying is now over. That's my update!

It seems that for almost every good experience with the current repair process we hear/see a real nightmare like this one. I doubt they leave a 'paper trail' at the mothership because some people should be FIRED or at least have an eye exam!!

I would guess that in years past almost every employee for Smith & Wesson, or other gun manufacturers, were gun enthusiasts themselves. Today I am guessing that is not the case. I may just be rambling, but it's just a casual observation that I have.

Smile Barrel is a keeper

Tried it out this AM and it seems to be OK. Just need to get the Ultra Dot dialed in a little better.

Default Plug screws arrived

The missing plug screws arrived in todays mail. Just two screws were missing, but S & W sent four. I'm not complaining cause I did finally get the barrel replaced and it turned out to be a pretty good accurate 41. Never buy a new firearm from a store and take for granted that everything is OK. Inspect it before buying and save yourself some agony. I've bought many firearms in my 80 years and this 41 turned out to be the one that gave me the worst headache and believe me it wasn't really that bad. Just be polite with the folks your dealing with and most times things will work out in your favor. This is my last post on this 41. Good luck to all.
