Default Aftermarket M39 Magazine?

A friend of mine has a box full of M39 magazines he bought years ago when a PD out west shifted from S&W M39's to something else ( he paid about $2.00 a piece). When I bought mine he gave me a couple as I only got one with the pistol. I had since bought another mag with a metal X follower in it (paid $25 for it). He told me to look through the ones he had for more of the metal followers. Well he had two of them so we traded them out for the ones he had given me. Also in there were two unmarked magazine that fit the M39. I am assuming they are aftermarket. Can anyone ID them?

Hey AJ, let us know how they work. I found them not really reliable.
Even using factory 115 ammo.

I had not planned on keeping the aftermarket mag. I will take it to the range next week and try it out. I figure he has given me two of the steel follower mags, that might be pushing it to ask to keep it. or even buy it from him. I have four mags for the 39 now.

I received one with the pistol when I bought it. I bought one with the metal follower at the LGS for $25.00. My friend gave me two (now with the metal followers). Four should do it for this 39. My friend has abbot 12 -15 in the box that he has, but he has had them over 20 years stored away.

Like I wrote they were from police department that had switched to something else. Right place at the right time.

In the mid 1980's I bought a crate of M1911 magazines at the Orange County Calif. gunshow. He had probably bought them at a Defense Reutilization Sale. I got 100 magazines for $100.

Since it only came with one original magazine, I accumulated five more factory mags for my 639, 3 X-follower (Early Model 39) style and two more stainless with black plastic followers like the one that came with the gun. I’m hoping to compete in a discipline that suggests five, and I figured one extra for insurance. Of course the truism is, if you are actually using the gun ,it’s hard to have too many mags.

I noticed Numrich Arms sold a Model 39 magazine with the metal follower. The website shows new manufacture (GPC). I was curious if anyone has seen or purchased one of these magazines. The magazine body looks like the original S&W 39 magazine.

Yes they are and is why I haven’t bought one. I have a model 39-2 which I carried on duty where I have three factory magazines. I bought a used shooter grade 439 but it only came with one magazine. I bought one nine round S&W 3906 magazine and one eight round ProMag. So far in limited shooting the ProMag has functioned but everyone knows ProMags reputation.

If these are quality mags I might consider buying one but for that price I might hold out for a couple of S&W factory mags.

I was just curious if anyone has any info on GPC Mfg. I noticed they manufacture several out of production magazines and firearms parts.

I use some factory 39 mags spares in my 3913., they stick out, but work and are a lot easier find than 3913 mags. VASCAR2, I would only buy Promag pistol magazines only if there was no other usable magazine available at any price and that would preclude me from carrying that gun for defense. They usually work, but fail more than I like for a carry gun. I have to admit that Promag magazines work well in my Ruger 10/22.

My 439 is basically a range toy but I wanted one because I carried one on duty. I figure my guns will end up going to my Grandsons and I just like having at least three original mags for any pistol that could be used for defense.

So far the ProMag has worked but the floor plate is different than S&W magazine’s. The GPC mag looks like a pretty good copy from the picture but I just as soon have the polymer follower.

I have never seen the mag sold by Numrich discussed online and thought I’d ask if anyone has purchased any.

I picked up a really filthy 6906 yesterday. It was $ 340 out the door. Only one 10 round magazine. It cleaned up really well and I hope to shoot it later this week. I didn't realize the mags were scarce. Available but expensive.

I'm getting a little tired of these magazine problems. Shield + mags are unobtanium. I had trouble with 4566 mags until I bought a 4506 with 13 mags. Unfortunately sold the 4566 and all the magazines. Now I may be unable to afford the 6906 mags. I have probably 30 Glock mags. Also many multiple Pmags. Makes me want to pull out my revolvers. (Got about 30+ Safariland speed loaders for them.)

Unless you are going to war then 2-4 mags should be plenty for the shooting most of us are doing. If you are going to war then the sky is the limit. If you are going to war with just a pistol then you should rethink things. Take a rifle with lots of mags and friends with guns. BTDT.

I like to have 6 mags for every platform. I used to keep 3 mags loaded and 3 resting. Don't do that anymore. I have seen magazines fail in training. Thats why police have always carried a full gun and 2 full reloads. Having extra loaded mags allows more shooting time at a range.

If my 6906 shoots OK I will end up buying more mags.

Understand what you are saying. Have also seen mags fail when you don't want them to do so. When I carried a M1911A1, i had three 2 mag pouches and one in the gun and one in the chamber for a total of 50 rounds on me. I was the senior man for a guard force for things that I should not talk about. When checking things at night I was by myself until back up arrived. Did not want to run out of ammo........

When I was issued a 6904 we were issued one 12 round mag with pinky extension and one 5904 mag with a grip sleeve. I used a flat model 59 magazine base for the added concealment on the 12 round mag. The grip sleeves are still available and should work on the MecGar 5900 series magazines. This is a viable option for those wanting magazines for a 469/6904/6906.

Precision Gun Specialties

Numrich Arms sell the same type of Grip Sleeve so you can use a 59/5904 mag with the 469/6904/6906. Unfortunately these sleeves appear to be out of stock.
