Ever forget you bid on something- then win it?
You would think that I would focus more on selling the guns I need to sell rather than buying more…. So, about a month ago I bid on a SS Scorpion M39 from Personal Protection Systems #10.
You guessed it. I won it. Original box, two mags, looking mostly unfired covered in safe dust.
Now I understand the man behind this wrote a book called:“Secrets of a Gunsmith”. I’d love to get a copy if anyone knows where one might be, and also - Any history anyone can offer would be so appreciated.
I’ll post pics after it lands. Still trying to sell the .44 magnum 1894 SBL…

Yes, a set of Rhodesian FAL handguards. Regretted that, they were nice and still painted correctly. Guns on the other hand, never. If I have the interest to bid then I have the wherewithall to hang in there and try to buy. I lose more than win, especially during the gunflation of last year/early this year. I know my limits and what the price and value is on a gun I have interest. When the bidding exceeds reason, I stop.

Well, I wouldn't say "forgot", but perhaps not at the forefront of my thoughts.
I do often provide the advice of not mixing the combination of late-evening boredom, more than two (2) smooth bourbons and a laptop open to GB.
Really bad idea.

Never forget I placed a bid, but sometimes often surprised I won. I'll admit it I'm a low ball bidder on the on-line auction sights and sometimes I win.

Yup, I've had a few accidental Gunbroker wins. A very cheap magazine was fine. The Armscor 38 SPL snubbie was not. Was able to sell it for a minor profit but try to be more careful tossing bids around.

I just won one last week that I had forgotten about primarily because my max bid was about $3-400 less than a previously offered one!! 👀
Happy, but SURPRISED the bid held up.

Yep, been awhile though. Over the years I've tossed a few $100-150 bids on 870s, 590s, or 38 hand electors and been surprised a week later with a "you've won!" notification.

Didn't forget, but also didn't think I'd win. Surprise, surprise.

Yes, not on a gun auction sight, but a few times on eBay.

Can't say as I ever forgot that I bid on something, but I will admit that I have bid so low on an item I felt assured I would never win - but did!
But like they say on the online auction sites - "Your bid is a contract"!

Well, I didn't exactly forget about a bid but I did place one once with absolutely no hope of it holding up so I didn't check back on it until I received the "You won" email from GunBroker.
Maybe five years ago, I saw a 2-1/2" Model 66-4 up for auction with an opening bid of $416. It was described as being in "average" condition but I couldn't see anything about it that would reduce it to "average." I downloaded and enlargened the seller's photos and it still could almost pass for unfired so just to get things moving for the seller, I placed that $416 bid, fully expecting to be blown out of the water in short order.
When the "You won" email came, I was surprised but held up my end and paid the seller. When the gun arrived, it was exactly how it appeared in its photos. Sometimes you just get lucky.
It had a Pachmyar grip on it so I upgraded it a little in that department.

No
but I've seen people win an item at live auctions when the didn't know they were bidding against themselves. The auctioneers were questionable people to say the least.

I did so on eBay with a automobile. It was Dec 2007 and I put a $17K bid on a 2005 car with 24K miles and an original sticker of over $47K. I thought $17K was low as I just wanted to see what it finally went for knowing I would get an email telling me I lost. Low and behold I won. It was a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire Limited convertible. For those who don't know, Mercedes bought Chrysler in early 2000s and the Crossfire was basically a Mercedes SLK 320 with a Chrysler body. Was nervous but drove to 150K miles over 10 years before selling it. It had some small issues that would have probably happened even if I bought it new.

The closest I came was putting something on my watch list which I forgot about until I was notified it was ending in a few hours. “Oh yeah” the little voice in my head said. I looked it up, no bids-put one in and won lol. Nothing too special, Knight’s M4 RAS.

I have ordered stuff and it take so long for the order to get filled and/or shipped that I’ve forgetten about it so it was a real surprise when it showed.

I have not really forgotten but as others have said I have put in an initial low bid that gets me in the que for alerts on a gun I like.
I got an email that I had won and was surprised and had forgotten all about the auction.
Now I am much more careful as you also have to pay shipping, TAXES and the transfer fee. So I only watch items I am interested in instead of putting in an initial bid unless I am serious about it.
I did buy back a gun I had up on consignment once. Between regretting letting it go to begin with and then the auction bringing far less then I expected I decided to eat the commission and transfer fee and put it back in the safe. I was glad to do it as the gun was very hard to come by.
