People have gone insane on prices
Was at the Tucson Gun Show today, and was looking for bargains on magazines and such. I wandered over to a table that the vendor had both 4506 and 1006 magazines for sale. When I asked him how much he wanted for those magazines the vendor said he wanted $100 USD each. After my shock wore off, I thanked him and walked off shaking my head. I bought a few S&W 4506 magazines lately recently for $35 USD, but $100 USD?!? I was seeing vendors selling Promag and off brand magazines for expensive prices. I thought I would have found deals bought it was ****.
I found better deals on my TDY location in Sierra Vista. The local gun shop here, Apocalypse Arms and Military Surplus, had bins of used OEM magazines, and I went to town! So far I bought five S&W 6906 for $16 USD each, Three 4006 with yellow followers for $20 USD each, one S&W 5906 for $20 USD, thirteen HK USP/P2000 .40 S&W magazines for $20 USD each, ten Colt AR 30 round magazines for $7.50 USD, and six more military Okay/Adventure Line for $7.50 USD. I think I emptied out their magazine bins, but when the deals are there, take them!

Screw that. I go to my LGS where I used to work, & look at their used guns, and when someone trades in a gun with 4 mags, the guy who buys that gun is only going to get 2, so the extras go in a box. While they’re not for sale to the public, they’ll sell them to me because I used to work there. $20 a pop. Matter of fact, I was there once looking for an extra 3913 mag. They didn’t have any, & I started to leave. Just as I got to the door, one of the salesmen said “stick around a minute, someone is trading in a 3913”. Once the seller left, I was able to get one of the 3913 mags for $20. Most of these extra mags are held for the magazine sellers I see at the local gun shows. GARY.

Gun prices all over are nuts, but 4506 mags for $100 isn't gonna get a lot of takers.

A couple of years ago I was called a fool for buying up every 4506 mag I could find for $35-$40. I replied, "See how you feel when they reach $100." Well now..........

Only $100 pistol magazine I ever heard of was the hi-cap Berettas and Glocks during the latter years of the federal AWB.
Ouch.

The same goes here. I hate to imagine what the value is now on the stash of 10mm magazines that I have for my 1006, 1076 & 1066.
Way back when, after S&W announced the end of support for 3rd Gen parts, I saw the hand writing on the wall and not only did I started buying mags, but parts as well.

Have you looked at ebay sold prices in the last few years?
The vendor was a bit high on the 4506 magazines, but he wasn’t that far off. They sell for between $70 and $100 at auction. His prices weren’t that bad on the 1006 mags. There are well over a dozen completed listings that sold between $100 and $150.
We all like to find great deals, but you really can’t criticize the vendor for asking market price. He has to schlep all his goods to the show, pay for the tables and spend a day or two dealing with the public. He’d have to be either ignorant or an idiot to sell them for $40 each, when he could list them on ebay and get 2-4X as much from the comfort of his home.

At the peak of the price hikes, 4506 magazines were selling for close to $100 on eBay, but prices seem to be drifting downward now.

I understand and respect his point of view and time; I wasn’t rude and thanked him for his time. I may not like the prices, but who am I to be rude and disrespectful? I was lucky when I bought my 4506 because it came with three magazines, and was able to find another five at reasonable prices. S&W 3rd Generation magazines are becoming increasing difficult to find except for the 59 series; even though the factory stainless steel ones are harder to find, you can still get Mec-Gar magazines in blue or nickel (OEM anyways) at reasonable prices. So anytime I see 3rd Generation magazines at reasonable prices I snag them.
Besides magazines, 3rd Generation guns have become sparse and not many are around. A few weeks ago I decided I wanted a 5906 to go with my 5903 and searching through Gunbroker there are not many listed anymore. I also saw that all the CHP 4006 TSW’s have dried up and there are no more. Maybe people discovered they are tanks, and would outlast generations

I'm curious (not being facetious) what does one need 8 or 10 magazines for? I've always used just three, one in gun and two for mag pouch.

Less time loading mags when you're at the range.

Ive been selling off my firearms collection as hard as i can go, and typically double my investment. Granted, many of these guns ive had for over 10 years. Some hard to find guns ive more than tripled my investment. Very few people even try to haggle.

$100.00+ magazines have been around for a long time for the people who own HK P7/M8/M13 pistols.

Magazines are a consumable. If you actually use them (actually train with them, not shoot a box every once in a while or carry them in your pocket) they will eventually wear out. Springs can be replaced, but spread and/or cracked feed lips can't. If there's a commercial source available, no big deal. If one wears out just buy another. However, if it's a finite, no longer produced item then it's a bigger concern. If your gun is a talisman, then rock on with a couple of mags. If it's a tool, then think differently. Do you expect the tires on your car to last forever?

I have a minimum of five operating magazines per gun. multiples of that if they are reasonably obtainable. If I want the gun to work, I will need magazines that work, I need to get the factory magazines for my firearms while these magazines are available. I do not want to practice clearing jams at the range with Promags, or worse misfeed in an actual emergency. I also fear the possible banning of the sale of magazines above 10 rounds capacity as a possible compromise in the gun control debate. I find the occasional bargain in and LGS or gun show bin, but generally I pay "too much" so that I will have them. The most that I have paid is about $65 per mag for factory Browning hi Power mags, but many other mags have been not much lower.

Try getting mags for a Steyr GB. I bought a commercial model a few years ago for about $550 (I know, stop thief) and at today's rates I only paid $150 for the gun.

Factory Bren 10 magazines will really cause you to pause and think about it.

Nice! I love GB's.
My first GB was a military that came with 3 mags and a compensator. I later bought a commercial off Gun List, sight unseen, for $800. I didn't really need another gun, but it came with 5 magazines and a compensator. At the time, magazines were bringing about $200/ea and the compensators were made out of unobtainium! I figure I got paid to buy it!
I bought a NIB commercial GB with 2 magazines a couple years ago. I don't have a new group photo, but I have one with my first 2.
10 magazines should hold me over nicely, but I'd still buy every one I could find for under $125.

If you think S$W mags are bad, try a colt 1908 .380 acp.
This here group of mags cost me a grand.
I would have spent more to get more, but this was all I could find.
1006 mags have been selling for $100 for many years on ebay. I assume 4506 mags will follow.

Load mags in front of the tv, on my time and on my dime.
Shoot them at the range.
Repeat.
10-12 for handguns, more than 30 for rifles.

I've gotten interested in ISSA. It's a timed plate match. You'd best have 5 loaded mags ready for each stage. Then you get to top off the mags before going to the next stage. More mags makes your life simpler in this game.

That’s sounds unusually high for 45XX mags, but 10XX mags have been going for $75 - $125(NIB) for a while.
I remember finding a 10XX mag at a gun show for $25, walked over to the table of a known 10XX collector and sold it to him for $75. Now that I own a 1006, I'll never find another $25. Magazine karma, perhaps...

I’ve got ten 4506 mags I think. Got most of them with the 4506’s I bought. I found 2 prototype marked mags on Gunbroker for $20 each, and found one at a LGS in the used bin for $10.
$100 is ridiculous. They’re not rare or even uncommon. Neither are the 10mm ones but everyone seems to think they are

Try the 10XX-series 10mm mags.
NOS/NIB mags, if you can find them, are well north of $125. Used but still serviceable mags are running $85-$100+ USD.

Lots of magazines are $100. Like Colt, Hi-Standard and Browning 22 mags from the older model guns. S&W clips for 422/ 41 ect were $22.50 last year. Now $80.

Try to find a 2213 or 2214 magazine for under $100
There are NONE on GB right now and only ONE on eBay - for $145!

**Apologies-I was having internet issues earlier but just got home and was able to find the following thread about the followers:
Question: differences between 4506 magazines
Bringing this back for a value question. I don’t pay gouger prices and sell things at inflated prices. That being said I have a few 4500 series mags with the yellow followers I got with the 4567. What is good/fair non-gouge value of these?
Also am I correct these are the “2nd Gen” mags with those that have black are 3rd? Orange the first?
Thanks

For genuine magazine pain, look at mags for the Coonan Classic. YIKES! I really wish I'd bought more while their doors were still open.

Yes you are correct, those are second gen mags.
There's no such thing as price gouging with this stuff. We're not talking about necessities like food, water, etc. The price is the price and the buyer is free to refuse.
With current pricing, I'd think $50 would be a price I could demand in good conscience.

I get a kick out of guys selling their stuff they had for years and brag about doubling their investment. Them old dollars were worth more, certainly more than double at 20yrs. In most cases you lost money, not doubled.
I had a guy tell me similar story recently. When I told him same as above he got defensive and said he got a better deal when he bought it. That took me aback and realized I was dealing with a mental midget. This guy would fit right in up at DC.

According to Google $100 from 2000 would be worth about $150 today. If someone bought a gun for $100 and sold it today and got $200 bucks they made out OK. If they had bought the gun back in 1980 and doubled their money then the deal wasn't very good.

Do you expect the tires on your car to last forever?

On the other other hand, if the magazine is a finite, out of production item, so is the gun itself. Lots of parts will be expensive and hard to find. So if a person wanted a firearm to use hard, as you describe, they'd be better off choosing a current production firearm.
Doesn't negate the loading magazines at home argument.

Was at a local gun show about 3 years ago. This guy across the isle had a grab box of magazines 10 bucks take your pick. Sig 239, Ruger P’s, Sig 226 and 228’s, you name it. Also some 5906 and 6906’s. Bought all of them and the box too. BTW, when I mentioned it on the Sig green forum they kicked me off.

That is odd. Did they give you a reason for kicking you off? What is green forum?

Lets see if you guys agree with me. The most used and damaged
part of any semi auto pistol is the mag? There fore, the most sought after part. And expensive.

I disagree, Mike.
The most used and damaged part of any firearm are the stocks (grips).

True about stocks/grips as regards wear.
Partly true regarding custom fit or style.
Only true about magazines because most folks want multiples, not because of wear or attrition.
That only applies to large agencies.
Strictly, supply and demand.

On this point you are generally correct. The rest of your statement is false equivalency. The magazine itself is more prone to fatigue and failure than most of the other parts that make up a firearm. By and large, the rest of the assembly is far more durable and less prone to damage. This is discounting something like a recoil spring, an item which no one seems to have a problem with acknowledging as a consumable, yet simply refuse to view the magazine in the same light.
Inconcievable.

Here's a bit of good news in regards to mags.
I bought two OEM (NOS?) mags for my old 1903 Colt 32acp Pocket Hammerless for $29.99 each at CDNN Sports yesterday.
Seemed like a pretty good deal to me.

Last show dealer had a baggie with “old mags” for $20, about broke arm giving him a 20. Among the whatever were 2 WWII 1911A-1 mags, one “S” toe marked Scovil And an unmarked Colt. Pays to shop around.

You don't have to go far to find crazy prices simply read some of the threads in the for sale area located here! What I enjoy the most is when they have a string of "Bump, To the Top" tail attached to them.
Or better yet, lets start off at a ridiculous asking price so it looks better the third....seventh time we reduce the price and kick it back to the top.
