Custom Building Gen 1-3s?
OK, it's getting colder here in Central VA. I'm beginning to think about my Winter projects. At this point, I'm studying on the idea of Millett adjustable sights on the 915 slide for my Model 639 Franken-Smith. I'm trying to decide whether it can be a DIY project or whether I need to take it to someone who knows what they're doing!
Anybody else starting to think about their Winter projects? Maybe we can get friend Guzzitaco to show off some of his latest toys.

You need to look at which Millett front sight you have.
The bulk of them were a dual crimp style and used a special tool that Millett
supplied to the dealers for doing the job
The rear sight can be changed by anyone that is competent with hand tools
As to Winter Projects, We don't really have those here in Florida

Hey Froggie,
why not a front Dawson and a rear LPA?
There are some LPA's online at decent prices and the rear cut on the slide can be done with hand files (I've done it)...
...or why not a Tasco/Optima mount and a Sig Romeo Zero red dot...that s a great combination..Thanksgiving sales around the corner ....
My projects? I am working o several...two M5906 slides to replace the slides I did with hand tools...3 M457 projects, 1 M6946 and 2 complete custom M5906s...nothing is ready to show yet...but soon...
I think the red dot is a great option...

I second either the LPA's or the Sig Romeo . I had the LPA's put on a 4566TSW and a 4006CHP . Guzzitaco has put a Sig Romeo on one of my 745's and on a 45Recon . They are great red dots and Sig backs them up .

Good, I got some response. To be a little more precise, the NOS Millett sights I found are a front and rear sight with dovetails for the 915 slide I will be using. Since it’s an orphan slide from Gun Choker, if I have to alter it a little to take those sights, “say la vee!” (To slay the French phrase!)
The 439 slide I’m using as an alternate would be hard to change the irons on… the front sight is forged onto the slide. OTOH, a base for a red dot sight will be easy to install and I’ll be good to go with a reflex style red dot such as the Sig Romeo mentioned above. I don’t have to to “go where no man has gone before”.
One gun, two iterations. This was the whole plan when I started planning Project Franken-Smith. Hopefully I can wrap it up during the Winter building season.

Not sure about the rest of you, but I wouldn’t mind a project teaser

Anybody else, or have age and decreasing parts availability moved these guns too far into collector status instead of guns we can pick up reasonably to “customize”?

They function very well, are very reliable, and thus I don't consider them collector pieces. Even though some parts aren't available from the factory, many are and others are available from other sources. My only real concern would be if the frame on an alloy gun cracked as there aren't any new ones available.
All of which means that it's an individual decision.

That is one baroque, rococo 5906.
Some times, the toughest part of creativity, is knowing when to stop.

I put a dot on a second 3914 top end I had, so I didnt have to mess with the original. Bought the base from Aristocrat. Works great.
