A gun nobody likes, a 4506-1 rail gun.
Well, you may not like her, but I sure do....
Here she is, a 4506-1 worked over by BMCM after a fouled attempt to mount a rail, figured might as well have him do some other stuffs to ol'girl...
Rail mounted, a duty action trigger job that rivals any PC I've ever felt, night sights, crowned barrel, spurless hammer, flat wire recoil spring conversion, 745 mag release and last but not least Decock only... She's sweet
She will have a surefire x300b mounted 99% of the time and the dedicated holster allows comfortable carry.
The holster is a Standard Course x300 dedicated holster with a Blade-Tech paddle, carry and rides very nice...
You ask yourself....Why?.... I say there is no better offering in 45acp in a DASA platform, but that's just my 2c...

Uh, actually... I really like the 4506-1, and I really would like to own one someday. Honestly, the only DA/SA .45 ACP handgun that I like better is the H&K USP45 Elite.

I agree with your assesment of the 4506-1, my favorite 45. Enjoy yours! Regards 18DAI

That’s a beauty, nice work!
And BTW,
You ask yourself....Why?.... I say there is no better offering in 45acp in a DASA platform, but that's just my 2c.
After my recent 4566 purchase from a member here, I could not agree more!

It's not the gun, Eric.
It's the rail...
Don't get me wrong, I like rails on guns.
I got more than my share of 3rd gens with rails.
Best way to mount a light, if I want one.
And I like yours.
You made a good choice with the Novak rail over the S&W accessory rail. (Maybe if the S&W add-on rail were Picatinny style like the integral rail...)
And the other upgrades are functional and tasteful.
But there will always be a hardcore contingent on this forum for whom add-on light rails are more annoying than Rachel Maddow!
My compliments to Bill on his "Carry-Light" package for your 4506-1.
John

Picked this one up from a friend last week. Think I’ll keep it.

I see nothing wrong with that gun! If you're young enough and tough enough to walk around with that much iron, good for you. I'm sure you will be well served.

The holster system allows for pretty secure holdings, I had my Glock 19 in it and it feels equal to the 4506....

I love my 4506. We were issued them after we traded in our 645, shortly before I retired. It has been to the range once, 50 rounds. It was carefully cleaned once again, and has had a special place in the safe. I prefer the alloy frame pistols for carry, such as the CS 45 & 4513TSW, as I no longer wear a uniform. I love the DA/SA type of pistol.

Really like 4506's and yours looks nicely enhanced.
I don't even mind the rail. Love 4506's and they are reliable as can be, but carrying around that big beautiful heavy chunk of steel all day is not something I would even consider now.
How did the trigger come out after reworking?

The trigger is the best DASA I've felt next to my 1066, also done by MR.BMCM.... if you want a trigger job done!? Send it to Bill...

My Smith & Wesson .45ACP automatic journey began in the Mid-1980s. I was an "Authorized Dealer" in those days, and got an early Model 645 as a "Dealer Sample." I still have it. Being a DA/SA automatic fan, I liked the 645 better than any 1911-pattern pistol. (The is heresy for a Colt collector!)
I never liked the square trigger guard shape on the Models 645 and 4506, so when the Model 4506-1 with the round trigger guard came out, I had to have one. I now have two Models 4506, one with fixed sights and the other with adjustable sights. Bother are early ones with silver triggers.
I too prefer the H-K USP45 to the 4506-1, but the FN FNX45 trumps both in my opinion. The FN has 14+1 capacity and is fully ambidextrous.

Over the years I've had a 4506 and a 4505; a 4516 and a early 6rd 4513...... but settled on a early fixed sight 4566 (silver hammer) as my keeper.
I was a .45 1911 guy through most of the 80s.... never really comfortable with cocked and locked carry; just before the 3rd gen guns were introduced I got a W. German Sig P-220 with the American mag release. I fell in love after added Hogue wood grips. Later added a 245 Compact for concealed carry.

I like it; the concept and the results.
It's to the point the topic of rails really isnt worth discussing on here anymore.

I say you have two things going for you: (1) Its a 4506-1, and (2) BMCM did the work.

The coolest thing about the railed 3rd gen guns was that if you drilled out the rivets and tapped the holes, you could easily swap from rail to no rail in a snap, and have a perfecy duty gun and a sleek carry pistol all in one.
I like your setup, and you could not do better for a duty pistol.

BMCM is a very talented gunsmith and member here. He has done a few threads showing us his work. IIRC, more than one of his interesting, informative and entertaining threads are in the "Notable threads" section at the top of the page. IMHO, ALL of them should be located there.
BMCM has repaired and modified many of our guns. Mine included. His work is on par, or better, than the craftsman at the original Performance Center, back when that existed.
And in addition, based on personal experience, he is a very fine and generous gent! Regards 18DAI

Right. I don't like it. I'll keep 4506 "normal". I never liked add on doodads added to a handgun.
Besides in a night fight your opponent is going to be shooting at your light which is on your gun in your hand and close to your body.

I never like lights or lasers on my handguns either....but a lot of shooters do, so " different strokes for different folks."
I just cringe at the price of holsters these days and to have an add on accessory increases that price ...and makes you holster huge.

Nice Pistol. I like the Decocker only config and all steel pistol. I'll bet it soaks up recoil and stays on target during firing. I've got a SIG 220R, I'll bet you got a better deal than I did.

Allright, talk me through your tactical showdown.
Lets say you find yourself in the unenviable position of a “night fight” but you are fortunate in that you have a handgun AND you have a flashlight.
Are we to expect that your first order of business is to toss that light 8 yards to your left, illuminated, so it draws the fire of your opponent, leaving you free to surgically eliminate him?

Yup, holsters would be a challenge but I think that that is an excellently done project. I think that lights are very beneficial if you have a real need for them.
I have a Dawson rail on my 1911 (before the rails became plentiful on 1911s) with a Surefire Nitron light (that should date it!).
And everything else you listed sounds great since that is what you want!
ETA: forgot to say... ..."I like it"!!

In before someone says:
"You have to use your trigger finger to actuate the light"
and
"I use my weapon mounted light for searching"

Often I don't not have a light mounted on a HG, in this case I do, for the purpose of identifying what it is I apply deadly force to
This is my working ranch gun, I'm backed up to a 68k acre reserve so main concern is wildlife, coyotes & wild dogs that were once domestic and even gators. Not many 2 legged critters round here..
I also understand the position of giving away my position with the light, thou I would rather light up with a WML or a handheld light and be absolutely sure of what's on the other end....

Contact Gordon @ Bang Bang Gun leather. I bet he could make a holster for the 4506-1 with the light attached. He is a talented craftsman. Regards 18DAI

Given the above; the light makes a lot of sense to me. That said I'd have kept the full trigger to allow a SA option for shots against the targets listed above!

I like it. Does anyone know why S&W never made a 4506TSW with the rail? Seems like it would have been an ideal duty pistol.

I didn't have one, but during the later years of my LE career, more and more officers used WMLs. Were I starting over, I would use one too....YMMV

Nope. Flash on Flash off. Iffen you're on my home tuff I really don't need a light. In a gun fight the good guys and bad guys always shoot at the light and noise.

They made 3, 2 of which are the same variants, a 4566tsw with a riveted aluminum rail, a 4566 with a integral molded as part of the frame, bot in bead blasted stainless and more over the Melonite WVSP4566TSW...
Edit: I meant 4566

Then what the heck difference does it make if the light is mounted on your handgun or not?!

Yeah I’m familiar with the 4566TSW but as far as I know there was never a factory 4506TSW with the longer slide and barrel. Though I suppose you could put a 4506 slide and barrel on a 4566TSW frame. That would be a sweet gun.

Having a WML is all about having options when you need it most. No one is saying you HAVE to use the WML, but if you need it, it is there. I guess some may never have gone from daylight into darkness doing a building search. A WML can be a huge benefit at times, but the key is to use it if needed to check the area and move with it turned off to avoid letting a bad guy know where you moved. I still remember when my department gave the okay for WML's, it was like walking out of the Dark Ages. My carry gun has a WML as well as my home defense gun. No way would I go back to a naked gun. You have stacked the deck against yourself without a WML.

Who cares what anybody else likes or does not like. That would have likely become something Smith started making if they had continued making them. I have been on the fence about sending mine off for a trigger job for a couple years now...

I like it!
I'd like a railed 4506-1. Wish Big Blue made it in the TSW line.
Oh well, my two 4566s will fill thd void.

Erocksmash, do you have any pics of the pistol without the light so we can see what the rail looks like?

How can you NOT like a railed 45 3rd gen?
Not a 4506, but will a 4566 "integral" rail qualify?
One of only about 700 made.
