New 3rd Gen 9mm 4 Inch Barrels
Hi Team 3rd Gen,
I just received a notice from a company who is located at the midway point of the USA that they have 5906/3906 barrels in stock. I don’t have a need as my 4” guns are TSW but some folks here may want them, plus it shows that new parts are still being made. A welcome surprise!

Based on the reviews, I'd say buyer beware. It sounds like these are late production barrels with the wide chamber hood. If you have an early production 3rd gen, you will need to have the hood narrowed.

I wasn’t sure if direct links would be frowned upon. I guess we’re good to go.

The S&W part number that Midway is displaying for that 5906 barrel is one that I have not seen.

So these are OEM and not after market? I wonder where they found them. I also wonder if there is a similar stash of Gen 1&2 barrels on a shelf somewhere. One can dream!

Any 9mm barrel chamber can be reamed to .357Sig...
But I know what you mean, Eric and no, the barrel for the conversion is the 5906 TSW.
The Midway barrel is for the 5906 standard which uses the smaller barrel bushing.

Received barrel today - Midway 494979 pkg date 11/23/2021 printed on plastic bag.
9mm on top no parabellum. Narrow hood fits in early slide but it has some differences from an older 5906 barrel - see photos.
I have not had a chance to try - it but May work???

That style 9mm barrel has the same lower lug machining as the one that's in my NYPD 3914DAO that I bought new.
The box's label says it was made in Jun-2015.
The S&W parts catalog that I believe we are all working from is dated 2012 which is why the S&W PN# they reference doesn't show up in it.
Obviously Midway's part picture is that of a different version barrel from what ACEd received.

The barrel bushing's inside diameter is the same for my 3-1/2" bbl. 3914DAO as my 3913TSW (Nov-2005) at .534" ID, which is the same as my 3914 (Oct-1989).
Did the 4" barrel 9mms have two different sizes of barrel bushings?

I wonder if these barrels were made specifically as replacement units for older pistols still in service?

Seems odd that it would be similar lugs on bottom as late 3914DAO but narrow hood on top to match early (pre 1993?) slides.
But I may get to try it this week in an early 5906 or maybe my 3906 or both.

Eric was asking about which 9mm barrel could be converted to .357Sig.
To convert to .357Sig, one needs a pistol with a .40 caliber breech face and a 9mm barrel.
The only 3rd gen that fits those criteria is the 5906TSW and that slide (and barrel) uses the larger .40 caliber barrel bushing.

It is the older, narrow hood barrel.
That would seem to be the case.

The change in the machining of the lower lug area is undoubtedly a manufacturing improvement that does not hurt the operation in the older pistols.

Works fine in early 5906/5904 with slide that matches narrow hood
