Default A couple of 1076’s

Purchased a 1076 back in ‘93 while on a task force. Several years ago I have it to my son. I just picked up another one from a former task force member & am wondering if it’s worth the $1k I gave for it? Very nice shape, box included with 2 mags. What do you guys think?

They don't make them any more and they aren't common.
The price doesn't surprise me.

What did they cost the general public in the early 1990s?
Around $700 or so?
Inflation would make that around $1300 today, not including the increase in value.

A search of completed auctions on Gunbroker shows them actually selling for $1076 to $1400 US.
Yep, someone got an S&W 1076 for $1076.
It looks like they sell for around what they did when they were brand new and in production, after adjusting for inflation.

They don't appear to be dropping in value. I don't think you got hurt.
If you're a gun-flipper who's looking to buy cheap and double your money, nah.
If you're an end user who wants the gun for yourself, I think you did very well. Like I said, they don't make these any more.
I think all the frame decocker 3rd gen Smiths are great collectors guns.

About 6 years ago, I paid $249 each for a 5906, 5946, and a 6906. All police trade-ins. All in very nice condition.
I paid about $389 for a 4566 in even better condition with the box, docs, and sight adjustment tool.
I was thrilled with those prices. They were cheap even at that time.

Around the same time I bought those, the same shop had a 4026 that was not in as nice of cosmetic condition as the 3rd gen pistols I bought from them. In fact, I bought my 4566 INSTEAD of the 4026. They also had a 4586 at the same time. I actually wanted it, but it was priced the same as the 4566 but in much more worn condition.

Anyway, the 4026 was priced a good bit higher than the 4566 I ended up buying.
If it had been priced in line with its condition, I would have bought it AND the 4566.

So, $1000 for a nice condition 1076+box and 2 mags???
Yeah, I'll take that deal all day long and run like hell out the door with it.

Thumbs up

Welcome Jimy J. I used to own a couple 1076s myself. Also had 1006s, and 1026s. Were I in the market, I would certainly pay $1000.00 for a 1076 in the condition you describe, with box, 2 mags, etc..

I was on the FBI/NOPD Violent Crime Task Force in the 90s. Smith was selling 1076s to FBI Agents for $300 in the original box with two mags. I took orders from everyone in the office and a bunch of task force guys since I had an FFL. Agents were told they could never be put on their POW list. This was after the 1076 program flamed out and most had been returned to Smith.

One day the mail room guy called me and said there was a whole pallet of boxes on the loading dock waiting for me. I must have gotten 100 of them.

I got one, but sold it several years ago to a member here for a grand. They are worth more now, since they will letter to the FBI.

You did good, especially with the box and it sounds like it was a law enforcement pistol which seems to add to the value also.

I have one I bought years ago to go with my 1006 . I bought an extra side decocker assy from Midway just in case . I finally shot it a while back , but it does nothing for me . I'd rather shoot my 1006 or my 610-2 . I didn't get a box but it's really clean and I lucked in to extra mags here years ago . I like my 10mm's , even my CS40/10mm , but that 1076 just doesn't do it for me .

I too was on a task force at the time I purchased one for $300 (with night sights and 2 mags. That was the one my son got. I kinda missed not having it (although I could borrow it back any time), so when my buddy decided to sell his I snapped it up. Been retired 13 years now...still enjoy shooting almost all of the weapons I carried back in the day!

The pricing on 3rd gens seems to be 10mm>45ACP>9mm>.40S&W from what I’ve observed, with exceptions for PC guns and rare variants like the Sig style decocker models.
