The serial# dates your Model 59 to about 1977. The finish is nickel plating, not stainless steel. Nice looking pistol.

Update on the 6906. Every time I bring it to the range I have to be super focused to have it shoot to point of aim, and it takes a couple mags for me to get there, and I have no idea why. None of my other pistols, auto or revolver, regardless of brand have this issue for me, just the 3rd gens. I think I'm done fighting it and will just sell it off sadly.

In more pleasant news, snagged this at a good price

Pretty impressed with it. Only issue I've noticed is that stupid barrel set screw that likes to undo itself, is there any reason not to use a dab of blue loctite on it?

I'm sorry to hear that you've had issues with your 6906.
I love mine.

It's not an issue with the gun, just with me. I've now had 2 6906s, a 5906, 5906TSW, 4563?TSW, and a 3913, and every single one of them has had this issue in my hands. The previous and current owners all love them. I guess the 3rd gens just aren't for me.

Default S&W Model 422 will not feed

I have a S&W Model 422 (.22) that I cannot pull the slide back far enough to strip a shell off the top of the clip, so consequently I cannot lock the slide back. I took the left grip off and can see the mechanism, but I still cannot make anything move enough to lock the slide back or to let it come back far enough to strip a fresh shell off of the magazine. It's perfectly clean, what can I do to make it function?

Welcome to the forum.
You will have much better luck getting help with your 422 if you start a new thread.

While in N. Fla. for Christmas I stopped into a LGS not know for great prices but I had time to kill. Low and behold they have a 5904 and price out the door is $300. Well early birthday (24th) present to me. It did take 2 1/2 hours for the BC to come back but.... So here she is with some "new" old shoes that I had from my 5906. Look better here I think.

A recent move of the household's "Gun Room" provided Ol' DC a chance to again cross paths with each firearm in his collection as if it were arriving anew, again. (Say that quickly three times.)

Whether each came directly from a previous owner or through intermediaries like auction houses or local gun stores after former owners traded it for a newer, sleeker and shinier firearm, all have tales to tell.

Stories that sometimes are easily coaxed, like that of an engraved, gold-inlaid Model 39 given to a 1960s Smith & Wesson board member. Yet, at other times they're difficult to understand, exhibiting scars of abuse, indifference and indignities once suffered while stuffed beneath a truck's seat or thrown into a tool box.

Some folks have at times looked at this collector rather strangely, trying to somehow fathom why someone, maybe anyone would care to collect upwards of 350 firearms, firing rounds through but a few, but admiring all.

The reasons are myriad beyond those stories referenced above, and even include hedging inflation (savings) or, especially as this collector sees it, the artwork found not only in a design or on that design's exterior, but the craftsmanship found within.

Better: This wannabe gunsmith can gain self-satisfaction by working within to smooth a trigger's pull or the strength exerted in its pull.

When I made the Gun Room move there was no intention to open each box or sock or rug and retrieve anything from inside. It just sorta happened when an old guy's memory was jogged and, as too often happened, he suddenly remembered a certain model and its configuration from Smith & Wesson.

One gun turned to two, then three and, well, you might imagine the rest of the story. For those who might need help envisioning such, it follows below. And I actually didn't even come close to opening them all . . .

Later.

Default 3906 and 4006

Like the title says. And, lest anyone question my allegiance, I figured I'd let my background do the answering.

I'm looking to swap some 6906 parts in my 3906, so feel free to check out the Gunsmith section to give some advice. Thanks!

Here is my Shorty 40. It is an exceptional gun. Although I recently put it up on Gunbroker to fund another addition to my Third Gen collection. I cant bring myself to shoot this one and I won't own guns that I cant shoot.

Default 4013 Picture

Here's a pic of the 4013 I just bought.

I never knew of the apparently legendary reliability of the S&W semi-autos. I don't know it the M&Ps are the same, but everything I've read on the 4013/3913 says they basically never fail to fire!

New Pics:

Took it to the range immediately! Fires great! No failures of any kind.

Default Pre-rail Compact 40's

That's a 4013TSW pre-rail.

Most 3rd Gens will feed & extract empty cases just as well as loaded cases.

.

4013TSW & 4056TSW (pre-rail)

(-01)

Default Finally came back

Purchased this 6906 new in 1992 when I lived in Calif, but sold it to a brother when I moved to NY in mid 2000's. He decided to get something smaller for CC, so he sold it back to me last week. I'm glad to have it back, and immediately took it to the range. That first pull isn't so bad.

Default 3rd gens

I've got a couple of recent pick ups and a police trade in.
Picked up a 6946 compact DA auto from Gander Mountain very recently and I'm very happy with it. decent bit of finish wear, but the trigger and action are both nice and smooth.
It looks a little beat up but it was a great project gun price.

I picked up a great condition 5904 and 5906 in a police confiscation auction.
The black 5904 auto is in excellent finish condition, but the trigger is ugly gritty and heavy. I'm excited about this project

The 5906 stainless wonder has a bit of holster wear but very fixable
The trigger was already crisp and smooth when I got it. I was amazed after feeling the 5904's right next to it.
I learned to tear it down using Blubelly2's guide on youtube and replaced the springs to bring the weight down to 4 lbs almost on the dot. It's super sweet and I am feeling confident enough to polish the internals to bring it to it's fullest potential.

My Shorty 40 Mk.I shoots lower than my other similar 40's.

Can you measure you front sight & let me know how tall it is?

Mine may be a slightly taller size than standard.

My mk 1 eyeball says comparing your photo to my shorty they are the same.

Not a precision measurement, but mine appears to be about 1/8 inch tall from top of slide. Hope this helps.

Great thread, and a big THANK YOU to all those who took the time to identify their pistols! I am considering buying a a pre owned semi auto of the 39 or 59 flavor, and it is nice to be able to narrow down and identify what I am looking at.

One question...If a person buys one of the older models, are there parts and service a available in case of breakage or malfunction? I have heard Smith "doesn't service" older guns any more. (???)

Thanx

This is a friends gun 4516-1. He's the second owner.
I did a partial disassembly for cleaning.
My first time adventure with this gun is posted on another thread, if anyone is interested. M4516-1 failure to fire...reason?

Here are the pics I took of it.
