Default S&W OEM 9mm extendable magazines question

I have 5, 4 for 59 series (single bump) and 1 for 69 series ( 2 bumps).
The purpose of the bump/bumps is to prevent them from being inserted into what gun OR to prevent them from being inserted too far into the slide area ?

So the magazine catch slot isn't reliable enough to accomplish that ?

Maybe it is, but why subject both notch and latch to the added stress when the potential problem is neatly addressed in the stamping of the body.

Not if someone tried to SLAM the magazines into the grip frame, shoving so hard it was almost like they were trying to push them out the top. No buttplate toe to help prevent over-insertion.
