Calling 1013/1014/1053 owners
For those of you that have one of these. Have you found a good load that seems to shoot the best out of these guns? Do they like heavy bullets, 180 or maybe 155 grain bullets? Also, any particular powder that gives less muzzle flash and boom than others? So far, everything I have tried has had a lot of flash. Even when it was still a 40, it had a lot. Guess I am not used to shooting 3.5" barrels.
Thanks,
Rosewood

What's the point if it doesn't have flash and boom? You are correct that a shorter barrel rifle or pistol seems to do that. The flash and boom are closer to the shooter. One reason I really don't care for an AR pistol.

I like the Underwood 165gr loadings with Speer bullets, GDHP for carry and TMJ in boxes of 50 for practice. Nice having a premium bonded HP and a FMJ loaded to the same power level.
Winchester 175gr silvertips also perform well but are not terribly spicey for 10mm Auto loads. But that's ok for a compact with a squishy aluminum frame.
Those are the loads I keep on hand and also use for test firing when I tinker up a new conversion for someone.
Cheers
Bill

Have you chronographed those loads? Any idea what speed they are out of the 3.5" barrel? Underwood list them at 1400 FPS, that is pretty hot. I am assuming their data is from a 5" barrel..
Thanks,

No but a fellow down in Florida I did a gun for reported an average of 1270 for the 165's as I recall. I imagine a gold dot at that speed should sting a wee bit.
Cheers

Yeah that would be ouchies!
Personally, I carry 180gr XTP loaded by Underwood in my BMCM 4053. I ain't no scientist but as long as you're within SAAMI spec for 10mm I would think the gun would be able to handle a few mags of them a year for practice without exploding, for at least the duration of your ownership.
YMMV

I have nicknamed mine Atomic Annie, Google search the name...
Gets a regular diet of 165/180 handled loads, but for carry she gets Underwood controlled chaos and Underwood 155gr xtps...
I did a pumpkin test with both Underwoods above and the controlled chaos absolutely blew the pumpkin appart, I figured if ima carry this gun, that would be best to avoid over penetration, the 155 left a big hole but went flying threw.....

If you want less/no flash try CFE-P. It doesn't give the highest MV but it groups very well in the majority of my handloads.
Because it lacks flash I don't use it much. Power Pistol is my favorite & it has lots of flash.
I've shot a little over (800) handloads thru mine & the majority have been Zero's 165gr JHP but the Nosler 180gr JHPs I tried did fine.
I don't see the 1013 having a preference for either, I personally just prefer 165gr bullets.
Full power loads (loaded to max COAL") create plenty of recoil in this light-weight combo (& heavy recoil springs exert lots of slide closing force) & I've found that the magazine's top round can get jostled forward sometimes & hit the nose of the slide stop's arm locking the slide back prematurely.
I've found in mine that Hornady's 155gr XTP, with it's more rounded bullet's nose, seemed to be less likely to cause this problem & are super accurate/consistent too.

I just picked up 500 155 XTPs from midway on clearance for 19.99 per 100. Have lots of CFEP, will give that a try. I really like reduced muzzle flash and boom for a carry piece. Once I get it tuned up, it may take place of the 3913 on some days.

I just got a first iteration 4013 and I'm seriously torn on converting it.
I almost wish it wasn't so minty, it would make it easier...

I know what you mean. My first one had factory Nightsights & was in the factory box but some time later I lucked up & came across another one in good shape with Novaks but without the box.
Still torn, I was finally swayed when Numrich had a 4013 barrel in-stock that I could use for the project.
For me it's mostly a novelty to have, rather than a necessity, but still fun no less.
Hopefully something will come your way to help with the decision.

I had BMCM do my CS40 to 10mm . Then I got to thinking now I don't have a CS40 , but I lucked across a nib CS40 .I was back to having one of each , CS9 , 40 and 45 . Then fate showed me a CS40 slide and another member offered me a CS40 barrel . The slide is down at guzzitacos getting his special treatment and then I'll have a sweet little pistol pack . A CS40 with an extra slide in 10mm . The reason for this long winded post is , if you want to save your 4013 , take your time . Find another slide , barrel and such and make another top end . It may take a while , but it's worth it . Then if you ever sell it you can charge more and say look what you're getting . Not only a clean 4013 , but a whole other top end in 10mm . And I would think it's easier to find 4013 parts than it is CS40 parts .

Of course you really only need another 4013 barrel (to ream to 10mm) to be able to convert one pistol back & forth from a 4013 to 1013, not to mention a compliment of magazines too.
