Default Price check....4506-1

Just wanting to see what the collective hive mind of brethren here thinks is a fair price for a 4506-1 I have a shot at making an offer on.

What would you say is a fair price to jump on in the current marketplace?

Pistol, one mag, Novak sights, no box, no manual

Condition is everything, I purchased a 4506 early production gun with adjustable sight and it was a transition gun does not have the thin dust cover with the cutout above the trigger, it is the one with out MIM hammer, slide stop, safety. Those parts are stainless from the factory. This gun was NIB never fired and I have everything, box, tools, cleaning kit, all still wrapped in the original paper. It was a find of a lifetime because it is some what rare. But rare does not always translate into $$$. I paid a little over a grand for it, and a four hour drive but worth every cent.

A fair price for a 4506-1, in the condition you describe with no box USE to be around $550 to $600. And quite often, you could "steal one" for less. It would appear that those days are over.

These days amidst the continuing stupidity in gun pricing I would guess that $700 to $800 would be considered a "fair" price for a clean 4506-1 with 1 mag and no box.

If ended auction prices on the BIG auction board are any indication, even torn up 4506-1s are $900 to $1K pistols. Seems the secret is out on these fine 45s. The 4506-1 is my favorite full size 45 pistol. Glad I bought mine when I did. Good luck! Hope this helps. Regards 18DAI

Agreed a 4506-1 700-800 in box 900 now. I personally don't care for the early version with stepped frame although they are in the same price range. This is one of the best 3rd gens S&W ever produced.

The days of finding them for $500 are long gone. Today, $700 would be a really good price, but I'm sure most would fetch $800. With a spare, factory mag and box, add about $100. If it is NIB, $1000 minimum. Welcome to an era of inflation.

I paid around $650 for my late production 4506-1 just over two years ago. Now if you can even find one in this area they are well over $1000. I've had offers to sell it but there's no way that's happening. As an esteemed member said above it's my favorite full sized 45 pistol. There's nothing else quite like it!

Bought a like new (99%) 4506 with round trigger guard out of a friend’s gun display case at a gun show 2 months ago. Adjustable sights. No box. One mag. Bought a S&W mag for 20 bucks off another friend. Bought a 4506 box off flea bay. Total 600 bucks. I think I did good considering no tax, no background check, no shipping.

Congrats! You got a deal on that 4506-1. Looking forward to your range report.

I have been hunting a late production 4506-1 with adjustable sights and cheesy laser etched markings for a couple of years now. Seen a few, but not found "the one".

I'm beginning to think I should have gone ahead and paid the $850 asking price for the LNIB example I saw on a local gunboard last year. Regards 18DAI

Yes, wise counsel! And if I didn't still have two examples - old duty gun, with adjustable sights and a pawn shop rescue with Novaks and flash chromed hammer/trigger - I may have been more inclined to pay the tariff.

As I still carry and use the 4506-1 for serious purpose, as well as teaching new shooters, I just want a late production "dash 3" variant to keep the wear and tear off the older guns. Pic below of my "Pawn shop rescue" 4506-1.......that I stole back in 2014......for $300 OTD. Regards 18DAI

Are you referring to a Dash-3 version?

I closed the deal today on the one I started this thread about.

TFE prefix serial, laser engraved PD agency, rounded trigger guard, stainless trigger & hammer.

So in .45 caliber I will now have the 4566, 4553, and now the 4506-1.

Ugh. When I took possession of my 4506-1, I immediately field stripped the pistol and found the ejector / mag disconnector broken. The seller refunded $30 as he knew I'd have to order the replacement part, detail strip the frame, and install the new part. No biggie I thought, I've repaired internal parts on 2nd and 3rd Gen pistols, and I intended to replace the recoil and firing pin springs. I order up the parts, Wolfe springs and a OEM grip from Midway USA, which arrived in four days, and the disconnector from NUMRICH GPC with some other small parts. GPC parts ordered day after Midway, shipped USPS 1st class, tracked from NY to Houston, Houston to Dallas, and then......well who knows? When I tried to initiate a parcel trace using the USPS website, I enter in five screens of data, and when you hit "submit" a message pops up stating "This function is not currently available". Maybe it'll arrive, but it's so deflating to have one small part delay enjoying a pistol I have been chasing down over the past year. Sorry to vent.

Interesting that the seller knew about the broken ejector, but did not disclose the issue before the sale. Glad he refunded you $30 to compensate for the broken part.

Everything is now all repaired and range ready. This particular firearm (4506-1) functions / cycles great with my 8 round Model 645 S&W mags, and with an 8 round .45 caliber S&W mag marked "This Magazine....with Yellow follower". I had mags for my S&W 4566 but didn't realize that the mags I had for that will not function in my 4506-1. I guess I didn't realize there were mags through the life cycle of 2nd & 3rd Gen S&W 4500 series guns that are different enough that they will not work if exchanged between the 645, 4506, 4506-1, 4566.

Its strange that your 4566 mags won't work. All the factory 8 round OEM mags, with red, yellow and black followers should lock in and work - in any and all 3rd Gen 45s.

Are the mags that won't work not locking into the magwell or not feeding? Are they blue Promags? If so, thats why they don't work. Promags are junk. Discard them and use the stainless tube, factory OEM. Regards 18DAI

No none of the mags I tried were aftermarket. The mags that would not work were all S&W stainless mags with black followers and base pads. The S&W yellow follower mags and the older 645 mags with orange followers were the only mags that would cycle rounds. Could swapping out the recoil spring for an 17 lb spring from a Wolfe calibration kit cause some type of issue? The recoil spring in the weapon at purchase seemed pretty worn out, so I thought I might need to drop in a stronger one from the Wolfe calibration pack (15,16,17, 18 and 20 lb springs) to prevent excessive recoil which is what I assumed caused the ejector / disconnector damage.

The mags insert and lock up, but when you release the slide it stops dead in its tracks at the back of the round and won't strip it or push it forwards towards the chamber. Kinda puzzling me?

4566,4576, and 4506, and 4506-1 mags are virtually the same and should work across all platforms in that size..

I have black, yellow, and read follower mags and they all run....

This is really odd?

Unless runing .45super I would do a factory LB replacement.

Are there single or double locking cuts on the side of the mags? If there are two cut outs, they could be 8 round factory OEM mags for for a Performance Center 945.

I don't own any 945 mags, yet , so I don't know if those would work in any other 3rd Gen 45.

I don't think recoil spring weight would effect mag feeding function. Regards 18DAI

The double cut 945s will work if slammed home the single cut 945s will not work in a standard 4506 I have tried just for T&E.

The dedicated 945 mags will have the cut placement a little higher up than a 4500 series mag correct me if I am wrong.

The black follower mags (marked ES-1 on the front) I am having trouble with do seem harder to seat than the others. The mags I'm having trouble with do not have double mag catch slots. I guess I can try to measure the distances to see what's what. I didn't even think about these possibly being dedicated 945 mags.

The odd thing is though all of my mags work flawlessly in my 4566?

That suggests a mag release issue IMO

Paid 650.00 for this one several years ago. Police trade in. Shoots like a dream! Only thing I did was stick new grips on it.

The blue followers are for the double stack 40 mags. I've never seen a blue follower for a 45XX series single stack mag.

The red/orange...ish followers were the first ones sent out with the 4506. Then came the yellow followers, used in all the 3rd Gen 45 mags.

The last were the black followers. The black followers also fitting all the previous mags and were the last iteration. I use the red and yellow followers in my range only mags, but for carry I only use the black followers. Regards 18DAI

galilman121 have you gotten your new 4506-1 out to the range yet? If so, how did you like it?

I wore mine at work yesterday. When it got slow I got a chance to run a few mags through it. Made me look good. The younger guys at the range asked if it was a Sig. Kids these days. Regards 18DAI

I have not been out to the range just yet. If you were going to drop a new Wolff spring onto a well loved ex-PD pistola (Tempe AZ PD) what strength spring would you personally use for a duty weapon?

Be careful with Wolfe 4506 springs. IIRC, they have confused the wadcutter spring with the factory OEM.

I would go with a factory OEM 14 pound? spring (part# 201610000) in a 4506-1 used on duty. Just for liability purposes and to avoid hearing from the agency armorer.

If I were shooting only hot loads constantly - 230 RA45T - I might step up to 16 pound spring weight. But I wouldn't go any higher than that. IIRC, you only need an 18 pound spring in a 4506 if you are shooting 45 Super.

Hopefully BMCM, Bluedot or Fastbolt will see your question and opine. But theres my 0.02. FWIW, in semi retirement and still carrying one of my 4506-1s, I'm running a factory OEM weight spring. Good luck! Hope this helps. Regards 18DAI

Wolff says factory standard is 14# that's incorrect. 14# is closer to a wadcutter spring. S&W p/n: 20161 is not a 14# spring, it's quite a bit stronger. Note: M1006 & M4506 as welll as all the other five inch big bores use the same recoil spring, that being 20161.

If you're unable to find a 20161 factory spring, PM me your info, I can spare one. If absolutely necessary to use a Wolff spring I'd recommend you go with SKU 47618. But make sure you orient the spring correctly. Often Wolff springs are repurposed 1911 springs thus one end has a closed coil with a smaller ID than the length of the spring. You need to orient the tight coil towards the breech and not the muzzle. As in, shove the tight coil onto your guiderod first, otherwise the gun won't run.

I don't use Wolff springs in any of my guns. If I'm unable to get a OEM spring I will make some new parts and set the gun up to run with a ISMI flatwire. My frequent carry 4506 is so setup with a 20# 36 coil ISMI spring.

Cheers
Bill

Guess I’ve gotten lucky. I’ve been using Wolff to replace springs in every used gun I have ever bought. At least 20 3rd Gen guns. I keep the factory mags in the bag the Wolff ones came in. Never had a problem, but I confess my guns don’t get shot all that much. Once or twice a year is all.

To be clear, I've got nothing against Wolfe Springs. At least someone is making the replacement consumables for 3rd Gen pistols that the current company calling itself s&w can't be bothered to.

And while changing recoil springs is a part of a good pistol maintenance schedule, I don't worry about it as much with the 5 inch and 4.25 inch, all steel 3rd Gen 45s, as I do with the aluminum framed, smaller pistols. IIRC factory recommendation was 3 years or 3K rounds.

My friend CALREB, who was an armorer, servicing a large agency where the 3rd Gen full size 45s were popular, taught us that the springs last a long time in service in the large 45s. So, I don't change them in my 4506s or 4566s, till the recoil springs take a 1/4 inch set. Compared to a OEM unused example. And I shoot mine far more than "average". I've yet to experience a malfunction in a 4506, or 4566. Not one. Regards 18DAI
