Default S&W 4546

Hello all! I am new to this forum and I have a question. I recently purchased a S&W 4546. It is minty condition and I think it’s an absolutely beautiful gun. Anyway, I took it to the local range to put it through its paces when a fellow shooter told me I shouldn’t be shooting it. When I asked why, he told me that I was holding a Unicorn and I should google the gun. When I got home, I did, but I did not find much info about it. Is there Anyone out there that could fill me in?

One year only, 5” DAO, and only 500 or so built. Not a unicorn, but still pretty special.Shoot it and enjoy it, you’ll go broke buying ammo before you wear it out!

Okay, I find this kind of interesting. Around these pages, two terms we use often are rare and scarce. Rare gets used more than it should, scarce doesn’t get used enough.

Your gun is scarce. Doesn’t show up often, wasn’t in the market for long and there is literally nowhere you could go right now and be lucky enough to find one. It’s truly a scarce model.

Rare is something they made much less of. We don’t have definite numbers applied, but for many of us to call it rare, there needs to be less than 500.

However! That you took it to a range and found some other random shooter that actually knows THAT much about a scarce 3rd Gen variant?! That is RARE! Yes, lots of us gather here, but out and about in the world? Hell I go to a gun show and can help them figure out nuances of the 1-2-3rd Gen pistols on their tables. (It’s really enjoyable, actually.)

Definitely a surprise to me that you randomly ran in to someone that know what an odd duck a 4546 is.

You’ll wonder what it is worth and whether you should shoot it or not? Well, in my opinion, my answer is two fold. First, if it was mine, I surely would not, but that’s easy for me as I have many similar guns to grab instead. So my more realistic answer would be that it depends on the original box with end label. If you also have that and a mint condition 4546, then my opinion would be no, tuck it away and go find a 4566 or 4506 because they made a zillion of those.

......."odd duck"?????

I happen to love mine, and all the other .45acp DAO guns....

As for pics, here's one:

Enjoy

P.S. if I ever run into another I'd buy it in a heart beat....

Well, it's been shot, so I think it's ok to continue shooting it. It is a rarely encountered version of the full size 45 ACP S&W. I would not beat it to death by turning it into a 45 Super, but change the recoil spring every 5000 rounds, deduct 500 if using +P ammo, and enjoy it.

The SWSC sort of takes a stab at defining "scarce", "rare", and "quite rare" when discussing RSR transitionals (reference page 387 in the 4th edition):

Fewer than 900 = scarce
200 - 400 = rare
Fewer than 200 = quite rare

I'm a little more generous in my back-of-the-napkin estimates:

<5000 = hard to find
<2000 = scarce
<1000 = rare
<500 = quite rare
<100 = unicorn
<10 = unobtanium

...or something like that.

"Rare" and "Hard to Find" are the ones that you decide you want to buy right after your read a thread about them here!

Like a Chicago PD 457DAO that has the DAO hammer and trigger.

Sevens mentioned that you couldn’t just go somewhere and find one, but that’s what I did, although I sure wasn’t looking for one.

I was amazed really at how easy it is to hit with that long pull trigger. Easier for me than my 645.

I am thinking of letting one if not both of them go. They don’t get a lot of use. I’m more of a revolver guy.
