ok, so I have this new sigma 9ve allied forces on the way. To complement my regular 9ve I love.

But now I just read a long article on mouseguns apparently with Glock influence, that Glock advises that a Nitride finish such as tennifer, melonite not be put over stainless.
The chromium in stainless would react with the Nitride, making a Rust PRODUCING finish!
What's up???
Anybody have rust issues with melonite over stainless? I paid extra thinking I was buying the ultimate in rust resistance.

I suggest you Google Richter Precision Coatings and see what SERIOUS finishes are available for firearms. My new gun has the Diamond-Like Carbon Black coating and it is - literally - SLICK.

And darn near impervious to anything we're likely to subject our guns to.

I have a S&W 1911PC with Melonite over SS. I live in the hot & steamy, it hasn’t rusted so far.
I am not certain what steel Glock uses but many if not most steels that I would expect them to use contain Chromium, just not as much as SS.

I think you need not worry, if this was a problem lots of us would be in deep doo-doo.

I bought a new 9VE Allied Forces model (sold it) and loved the black finish. I own a beater Sigma 9F (black) and the finish is still good in spite little care on my part. Wish my 40VE were not 2-tone. I really like the black "satin" finish.

Here is a different look on a M&P9c. I like the two-tone look and removed the finish easily with Mother's mag polish. I do not carry and it makes it easier to keep looking good. Now there is no worry with scratches. That's what makes us individuals.

Carbonitriding is done to stainless, but the process is slightly different than when done to carbon steel. The Melonite done to carbon steel is the QPQ process, while that done to stainless stops at QP (Quench-Polish).

You can read more about it at:

Melonite treatment of stainless makes it so impervious you can almost store the gun in water if you want. Any stainless so treated will remain rust free for any reasonable length of time.

If you are not sure, when your new SIGMA arrives, pull the slide, disassemble and remove the internals, drop the slide into a fish bowl for a few days and test her out.
