Default Nickel 52-2

Sometime ago I started a thread that included a pic of my S&W semi autos. There was a mix of both blue & nickel of some of the same models. At the bottom of the pic was my 52-2 without a nickel counterpart. I had thought at the time it would be really cool to have both blue & nickel in a 52 but I knew I wasn't going to buy a 52 and send it to Fords or someone to refinish it.

Fast forward 3 yrs to the recently completed S&W symposium in Concord, NC. At the end of the 2nd day, sitting next to guns attributed to Jesse James and Teddy Roosevelt, was a nickel 52-2 with box, docs, 4 mags and nickel barrel weight.

Needless to say I'm tickled to have it. It has been shot and I'm looking forward to shooting it myself. When I broke it down to clean it I found the R-N stamp on the left side grip frame. I've included a pic of the stamp and date which I can't conclusively determine. Maybe someone here can tell what it is. According to Roy the gun shipped in May 74.

Pics are not great and comments welcome. If anyone has a 52 that has been nickeled or knows where there are others please tell.

Thanks for looking.

Well that is cool as cool can be !!

The Nickel barrel weight just throws it over the top !!!

I would not have been able to pass that one up either !!

Hello Dan, that is neat. Kind of grows on you. Never seen or heard of one before. Friends of the factory could get things done back then, with money.

g-dad, just for a pic, put some wood grips on it. Just for a comparison.
Or ivories!

I'm not a fan of the rubber and will be looking for a decent set of wood.

Here's the pic with wood.

I like it. If I had my way, they would have left the hammer block safety blued, along with the slide stop and maybe even the magazine release.

Because of the trigger, hammer and rear sight, just seems like all the small bits would be a nice contrast.

That's what I thought too. If that's correct the buyer sent it back shortly after it was shipped.

I agree. What I didn't show is one base plate is also nickeled but not shiny.

That really is quite cool. G-dad can you educate me on the R-N? Who was R-N? Does that mean it was factory finished or refinished? Are you going to get a letter on it? Do you know the date of manufacture?

Back in 1974 it was customary on factory nickel 39-2s, to plate the slide release and de-cocker lever. Blue "controls" started showing up in late 1976. Based on my study and list of nickel 39-2s.

R-N is the factory stamp for Refinish-Nickel. The gun was shipped May 1974. The 74 stamp is when the factory refinished the gun.

My cousin has one exactly like this. He said if he ever sells it I'm first on the list to buy it.

Are you saying he also has one that has been refinished in nickel?

g-dad, congrats on the purchase of a unique factory gun. You may have just opened a big barrel of fun monkeys.

He bought it at a sheriff's auction about 20-25 years ago. It was nickel plated when he bought it.

Wonder if it has the factory R-N stamp on the left side grip frame. I feel certain these aren't the only 2 that have been refinished but I also would think there aren't many. Hope you get!

BTW, can you get a pic or 2 of it? Especially with the grips off.
