Default 645 Help

Hello! I’m a long term lurker but first time poster on this forum.

Recently purchased a 645 online. Took it out to the range today and found out the trigger in single action was ATROCIOUS. Reset is short but the wall feels like it is 15 pounds. Letting the trigger past the reset point is very gritty. Anyone have any suggestions? Double action is fine but single is just unusable. The rest of the gun is great, so I’d really like to fix this problem.

I let two RSOs try it out and they found it as bad as I did. Based on what I know about the 645, I don’t think this is normal and that something is broken/needs severe polishing.

My first step would be a good detail clean and inspection. The problem might reveal its self.

Doesn’t sound right. My 645 has a very nice single action break, light and clean. As mentioned above I’d clean it up good, and if that doesn’t work, I’d have a competent gunsmith look at it.

Something is very wrong. Those 645’s were very nicely tuned and fitted pistols. I’ve had several of that genre, 645, 4506 and the triggers were nice. Not like the **** triggers Smith tries to pass off on consumers these days in their autos.

Smith should have stopped at the 3rd Generation on their autos instead of copying GLOCK.

Any armorer, or gunsmith should be able to fix the issue Riki Tik. Are you close to eastern Kentucky by any chance? I may be able to help you out.

Regards, Rick Gibbs

Thank you for the helpful responses everyone!
@Rlg#17 I definitely agree, wish they would bring them back. Appreciate the offer by the way, but I'm in North Texas.

Gave it a good cleaning, but didn't help much. Will be taking it into my local gunsmith this afternoon.

Many years ago when the 645 came out, I bought one. As with the OP, the trigger sucked. I even sent it back to S&W to fix it. They sent it back with a note which said “we did what we could, but it’s not a target weapon”. It still sucked, but was very accurate. I sold it a year later. Fast forward many years later, [five years ago] and I found another one. [very early one] This one has the most amazing trigger, but I have no idea if it is stock, or modified. Sorry, I have no suggestions. GARY.
