I just purchased one of the s&w 4006's from buds and was wanting a place to pick up some smaller grips than the hogue, and possibly an extended slide stop. i am a lefty so the slide stop helps. i am wondering if the stock grips from s&w are smaller or about the same. thanks to all who can help.

I think the original S&W grips are smaller than the Hogues. usually a bit thinner, you can also get curved grips, palm swell from them. I have ordered these grips from S&W for my 4006.

The factory 1 piece grips are much thinner than the Hogue grips. Finding something fits good in your hand seems to be problematic with these 3rd gen pistols.
I have a 4506-1, 4516-1 and a 4006 and have tried both styles of the factory grips and hogues... and if you search the forum, you'll find many threads with people discussing grips.
I ended up with hogue on the 4516-1, factory arched(curved) on the 4006 and factory FBI Palmswell on the 4506-1, after trying them all on each gun. Sure wish there was a "try before you buy" ability with grips... gets kind of expensive trying to find what works best.
I do not think there are any extended slide release levers on the market. If you look at the end of the release lever where detent bears on a folded strip of metal, that is part of the sideplate assemply under the grip. That part has pins that goes through the frame and holds together a whole bunch of parts, so there is no room to extend the release lever back any further.

Gunhacker,
Is it truly the "FBI" Palmswell grip?
The S&W P/N's for the 1076 were:
203630000 - Grip, Curved DL (Delrin)
203650000 - Grip, Straight DL (Delrin)
205000000 - Grip, Palm Swell DL (Delrin) - ("FBI")
And the widths installed on the 1076 are approx. using a vernier/dial indicator:
Curved - 1.075" Wide
Straight - 1.085" Wide
Palm Swell -("FBI") - 1.235" Wide
I'm curious as to which one you have?
Because,
The S&W P/N's for the 4506 were different because it was a slide mounted decocker with similar widths:
203590000 - Grip, Curved DL(Delrin)
203620000 - Grip, Straight DL(Delrin)
And the widths installed on the 4506 are approx. using a vernier/dial indicator:
Curved - 1.100" Wide
Straight - 1.100" Wide
Thanks,
BM1

Its possible the palm swell and curved he is refering to are the same.... I have tried to get the FBI grips from S&W for several years now and they have not been available..If they are the FBI then they would be highly sought after IMO..

Hello, I am not sure how old this is but I will post what I know anyway in case it helps. About 15 years ago I ran across a guy that had two 3rd gen S&W pistols, I think it was a 1006 and a 4505 if my memory serves me correctly. The 4505 of course stood out since it was blue/black so I am certain about that one-not sure if the other was a 1006 or one of the shorter tens. I know that both had the FBI grips on them, and it was the first I had seen of these and I am sure I had a conversation with the owner about the grips. I think he said they were able to fit the guns with the slide mounted safety without trouble other than the gap on the left side for the decocking lever that the 1076 has. Of course the standard 4506 grips don't go on the decocker gun at all. I had a 4506 at the time and wanted a set of the FBI grips but apparently they were not easy to get, and apparently that is still the case now. Anyone know what a set would be worth? I don't have any but I am always looking, I want another 4506 as well.

Just stumbled over this old thread and saw your question.
Yes, it is the FBI Palmswell grips for a 1076, I ordered them from S&W.
There is a slight gap where the frame mounted decocker would have been but it's hardly noticeable and they feel great. No modification was needed, they slipped right on.
