Default 8 round 1911 45 auto mags

My son in law bought a Springfield 1911 45 auto Ronin and wants a few more mags for it. I am used to standard 7 round mags but would appreciate input on what 8 round mags (which he prefers) are good and bad based on your experience. Suggested sources also appreciated

I use them both with no problems whatsoever! Google CDNN Sports and you’ll find them both for sale at decent prices!

I have a couple of McCormick 8 rounders that run fine in my Colts/GM/GC and the Officer with the long grips+adaptor.

I prefer 7 rounds magazines. With the 1911 I go for reliability.

I think the Wilson 8 rounds magazines are probably the best for 8 rounds.

I have couple McCormick 8rd mags. Top quality. I would suspect Wilson just as good. Mine are stainless. GI mags are more dependable than the low end aftermarkets.

I have used Wilson's in both 7 and 8rd capacity for many years and they are fine. There are several other good, reliable ones out there as well like Mccormick's.

While I own many of both capacities (we have lots of 1911s) my preference is for the 8 rounders

I have been using the 8 round magazines for carry going back to the 1980s at least, possibly longer.

Originally designed by Devel, yes the same company that developed the ASP pistols, the product was later taken over by Chip McCormick. These are flush fit magazines with a redesigned follower.

Chip McCormick private labels these 8 round magazines for many of the 1911 manufacturers. The follower is the give-a-way. Colt went to the 8 round Chip McCormick design sometime in the 1990s

In my Family's use these magazines have been totally reliable for 10s of thousands of rounds, probably hundreds of thousands. I have long lost track how much 45ACP ammunition my family has put down range over these decades

So if there is no downside, why would anyone choose the magazine that holds less ammunition ?

The original ASP guns were done by Paris Theodore of Seventrees. "ASP" comes from "Advanced Sytems and Procedures".

Devel was a follow-on and good gun.

I don't know when Devel brought out the 8-round magazines, but Austin Behlert was converting 7-round mags to 8-round at the 1981 USPSA Nationals.

You are right. . . . I don't know where my brain was

The Devel was a competitor to the ASP

I have used McCormick Shooting Star 8 rounders for many years without any problems. In the past couple of years, I have been also using Wilson 8 rounders without any problems.

I’ve got about a dozen or so 8 rounders and have never had any issues with them. I’ve shot them silly and they keep asking for more!

I think I have 17 or 18 8 and 10 round McCormicks that I’ve used for over 30 years with no issues at all. I used them in USPSA competition and dropped them in the mud, dirt and sand and walked on them with no failures at all. Tens of thousands of rounds have gone through them and they’re still going and I’ve never had to replace a spring.

I also have some Mec-Gar and Metalform in 9mm and 38 Super and never had a problem with them.

Learn something new here every day. I have a Devel mag guess it just became collectible. Colt SSA - can you tell us what about the follower is the giveaway that it is a CMC mag ?
OP Tom I agree with others here - I use Wilsons in .45 and 9mm. I did take advantage of the Ed Brown turn in program a few years ago and have his also they run fine.

The ASP and Devel are similar, but not the same gun.

The original ASP conversions were done my Paris Theodore in New York. I’ve read that ASP (Armament Systems and Procedures) was later bought out by Kevin Parsons who continued doing this modification of S&W Model 39’s for a few years.

The Devel conversions were done by Charles Kelsey, an Ohio gunsmith. Legend has it that he order an ASP, never received it, so he came up with his own version.
