Was following a rusty old pitted 39 mag on e-bay. $73 hammer price. I mean rusty and pitted. Was not a pre mag with the flat steel follower, but a stamped steel X follower. Nothing special I could see. Any thoughts?

Jeppo, I believe you are spot on. I mean, not worthy of even putting near a mod-39, much less putting it in the mag well.

I collect shooters and have few expensive guns, but I do not buy rust unless I was going to restore and fix it completely before putting it near anything in my collection and not at that price for a 39 mag. They can still be had in very good condition for less than that.

When I was accumulating mags for my Model 639 project a year or so ago, people were starting to complain about the rising cost of mags, but by careful shopping online I was able to get two stainless 639 mags and two X follower Model 39 mags for an average of less than $50 each. They’re out there, but you need to look for them.

My 39 came with one mag. Haggled with a dealer at a LGS and got a steel X follower for $25.00. The a friend gave me two steel X follower mags. So four should do me. My friend had fallen into a deal for M39 mags when a PD changed to something else. He gave $5.00 a piece for 20 of them. This was 25 or so years ago.
