Default What to look for in a 2017 41 pistol ?

I am looking at a made in 2017 S&W 41 in the 7 inch barrel. Mint.
Looks like it had been shot 200 times maybe no mark that I can see. It’s at a gun shop 1 hr from me on consignment. Asking price is $1100.00. Comes with 4 magazines and original blue plastic blue box. A lot of money for a used gun with out shooting it.
I need to talk to the owner and find out a little more about the pistol.
My question is what would be the obvious things I should be looking at ? I don’t think the Gun shop owner would let me break it down in couple of pieces but maybe give him $10.00 for the donut fund and he might. I have a rough decision to make. I have narrowed my choice down between the above Gun and the Volquartsen black mamba 6 inch barrel with piccaney rail and iron sights. Plan is to buy a nice red dot for the pistol I choose here.
My Freind has had both and said Marty when you get 90 and kids are planning to put you in nursing home the S&W 41 7 inch barrel will hold its resale value better than the Volquartsen black Mamba.
I am Not sure of that but my 90 year old Freind is going through that right now. What say you ? Thanks guys. MD

First off, if I were 90 years old and the kids were putting me in a nursing home, I wouldn’t care a rat’s behind about how much they were getting for my pistol.

There isn’t much you can check at the gun store’s counter. Look for wear or damage on the exterior, working of the slide & safety, check the rifling, and the breach face. Stuff you would check on any semi-auto. I’m sure they won’t let you shoot it a few hundred times to check functioning.

The model 41 was designed to be the best bullseye target pistol they could make and sell. It’s very accurate and heavy by design. The tight tolerances can make problems and it is sometimes picky about what ammo it works best. That said, it is a pistol you can be proud to own.

The Volquartsen is made more for action shooting. It’s one of the best for games like Steel Challenge where a little accuracy can be sacrificed for better speed in handling. My Black Mamba has functioned perfectly with every ammo I’ve tried in it.

Your money, your choice. Can’t go wrong with either one but it depends on what you want to use it for. I have both because I couldn’t make my mind up.

Keep in mind those extra magazines are worth over $50 apiece. An almost new 41 will be tight, and will take some breaking in, 500-800 rounds should do it. A drop of light oil on the top round in each magazine will help it run smoother until it is broken in.

Thanks for the good advice. I did not realize that the Volquartsen pistols were used for speed steel shooting matches and not used much for paper target shooting. So it sounds like for accuracy the Smith and Wession 41 is made more for true paper target shooting for numbers. I was leaning towards Volquartsen because their plant is only 3 hrs away from me and I could stop for a visit and pick out color combos I would like and If I had issues I could work the issues out in person with Volquartsen if need be. I better start thinking more about the model 41 for paper shooting. Thanks again. Marty
