I have been following the very interesting discussion of the infamous FBI 1076 so I thought some of you collectors of the 1076, more specifically the model shipped to the Bureau, might like to see my example along with some associated literature/items. Thanks Dave for a really detailed summary of the specifics of this pistol and things collectors need to pay attention to when searching out the Bureau shipped guns. This one is TEU0327 that wound up as a red handle dry fire gun as it still has remants of the red paint on the grips. I wish the dealer in Texas where the gun came from a few years back would not have removed the paint. He thought it would be easier to sell with the grips cleaned up. I have many more photos of these items and will send them separately if anyone is interested. I am looking for an 11 round hi-cap magazine if anyone has an extra. I know these are tough to find however, even working around agents who trained on and carried this model for the short while it was in service hasn't turned one up.

As a 10mm 1076 owner, thanks for the literature and pictures. I was considering selling mine but after seeing your post I think I will keep it for a while longer. I just wish 10mm ammo wasn't so expensive outside of reloading.

Lady Fed, thanks for this posting. It would be nice to attach this to the recent 1076 posting. It is intersting that your model has the horizontal lines on the anterior aspect of the grip. And interestingly enough, I just purchased a S&W Standard catalog (2006) that talks about the FBi 1076 and states that those with serial number beginning TEU, like yours that is pictured, stands for "Test & Evaluation Unit." But it also states tht another model with serial number TFKxxx has alos been confirmed. The book needs a little updating because other serial numbers with a variety of prefixes have also been confirmed. I wonder if TEU was part of the original shipment that went to the FBI, or maybe there was only one shipment? Anyway, thanks for the post and pictures. We should have a seperate section in this forum just for the 1076 where we can have people post the copies of their letters, if they so choose? Where's DMC, what does he think about this?

dacoontz, I did not want to hijack your original thread plus I knew I had several photos to post so I simply began a new one. Yes, I have heard the TEU stands for Test and Evaluation Unit, however in speaking to some of the FTU personnel who've been at Quantico since the 1076 was in service, they do not remember if there was any such unit within the FTU that would have caused S&W to go so far as to create a serial number prefix to represent it. Maybe Dave will know after he sees this.

Mr. Simmons, I will have to defer your question on the extended caps to DMC. I have heard that agents received a couple of each, 9/11/15, when issued the pistol, but I do not know that for certain. The literature from the FTU at the time only shows the 9 Rd mag.

They were used to lay down a field of cover fire you didn't want to be on the receiving end of....lol

I don't really know but back in the early 90's when we were turning in our revolvers for hi-capacity auto's there was something in law enforcement about having extended capacity magazines. I traded my 4" model 64 for a 659 and a required piece of equipment was a S&W 20 round magazine. This was of course until Ramline started making 18 round flush fit magazines and then we all had to have them. It would drive the firearms instructors nuts when they laid out the duty ammo, leaving 43 rounds in a 50 round box (since we started with 14 round magazines when 659's were first introduced) and we would have to have them draw more duty ammo when we showed up asking for 12 more rounds.

I think I remember somewhere that the 15 round 1076 mags were for call out bags or the bail out bags of the time, an extra piece of insurance if you though you may need it. I am sure that LadyFed can answer it better than I.

Thank you for the info on the mag. It appears to have a factory logo so I was wondering if it was made special by S&W for the FBi or if it was a regular item in the S&W catalog at the time.

11-round (2) and 15-round (1) magazines were actually issued to Agents along with the 1076. Agents carried the two 11-round magazines in their magazine pouchs. It was impractical to carry the 15-round magazine for obvious reasons. Agents were allowed to use the 11-round mags in qualifying but not the 15-round mag. Bureau documents indicate that the FBI 1076 experienced unacceptable feeding problems with the 15-round mag and it is unclear if those problems were ever remedied. The 15-round mag was never offered for public sale and is extremely rare these days.

I have both the 1076 and the 1066 (even more rare). The 1076 was issued to the KY State Police, but doesn't have the logo on it and has the disconnector. It has a inventory number electric pencil inscribed on the trigger guard. It also has the decocker upgrade to it, but there seems to be a problem with the trigger. When dryfiring in dbl action mode.. the hammer sometimes stops at the decock position and have to pull through the trigger again to get the hammer to fall all the way. Anyone know what might be causing this. I am considering having to send it back to Smith to have them go through it. The 1066 is the one that I am currently using as my off duty gun.

As much as I appreciate your husband and what he's done for my collection...as much as I'm enjoying this thread...and even though my wife's two best quilting buddies are FBI agents here in Casper, I have to point out that the "key" article in the June 1990 issue of AR, isn't about the FBI's 1076!
The focal point has to be that often overlooked article about the "Pre-64 Model 70 serial #1!" Yes, the 1st "Rifleman's Rifle" showed up at a hardware store in Durango, Co.! (Kinda like Chuck's Nickel 29-1 that sat on top of a TV in Arizona - being used to kill rats!") I love those stories!!!!

Im just wondering if I screwed up or not mine came with yellow on the grips and was able to get it off little by little.

LadyFed, please accept my apologies for removing the red paint from the grips! When I got this batch of 1076's, I think there were nine guns or so and either six or seven were actual FBI guns, I saw the red grips and immediately cleaned them up. I didn't have any idea this was an actual FBI mod until I spoke with Chuck on the phone and he told me about the red paint.

I kept two of the FBI 1076's and had them lettered, I believe the remainder all went to forum members.

Hi LadyFed! Absolutely awesome post. Chuck's photos are always a marvel. S&W personnel there at the time advised that TEU was simply the alpha prefix on the pistol rack from which the original 50 (approximately) pistols sent to the FBI Academy where pulled. It does not stand for Test & Evaluation Unit. But I do believe your pistol was an original test pistol and later deactivated and used as a red handle. I have a theory that many if not all the original test pistols were converted to red handles. S&W advised that when they got the FBI 1076s back to replaced the red painted grips were replaced before the pistols were shipped out as used guns. But this does not appear to exactly true, your pistol being a case in point. I have three TEUs and none show any evidence of being red handles. What is clear is that the original test pistols (1st issue) were returned to S&W along with the bulk of the production run (2nd issue). The odd thing is that the Bureau collected up all the recall 1076s with a deadline of 5/91. That jives with when I turned in my first 1076 (the one that is out there somewhere). But Mr. Jinks advises the recall pistols came back in
6/92. Did they all sit in the Gun Vault for a year? No one seems to know. Stay safe out there. D

I went through the FBI Firearms Instructors Course in the Spring of 1991 at Camp Smith in Peekskill, NY. That was the first time we all saw the "new" 1076. The instructors/agents let us shoot them. I was impressed with the gun but the agents were saying how they were too heavy to be carried while wearing a suit and that they wouldn't be in use too long. They were right. Wow, where did the years go.
