Default Spring nomenclature

I'm looking at what is called a mainspring for a 4046. Is that the same as the recoil spring?
What a world.

Thank you!

Main spring is for the hammer.
Recoil spring is in the slide.

The Main Spring for a 3rd Gen is positioned more like the trigger spring in a J frame if that helps.

Like the hammer spring I'll believe. Trigger return spring is located in front of the trigger, not behind it, like revolvers .

I believe it's a hangover from the way parts were named in the 1911.

Yes, that's correct. I'm not sure what (if) I was thinking when I typed that.
