I noticed on the news last night that there was going to be a severe shortage of ammo very soon and that even law enforcement couldn't get enough for practice. Anyone else see this and should I be stocking up? This was noticed at a gun show in Salt Lake so would appreciate any factual info on this.

Dick's (appropriate name) advertises UMC 9mm, .380, etc on sale in its Sunday flyer. Just back from my local Dick(s), plenty of .22 and shotgun shells.........that's it folks. Wasted gas for a sales lure.

I'm sorry to tell ya. If you haven't gotten ammo by now its probably too late. What little there is out there is really expensive too.

Hello Joseph,
The shortage you speak of has been going on for a while now(3 months here in Texas). If anyone is looking for 380 ammo, forget. The production schedule I've been told won't get better until Oct. maybe. Finding 9mm is more of a timing thing these days. If you are at the store when the shipment arrives you can get some. Up until this morning, Academy sports would sell you all you could buy if in stock. Same with Wal-Mart. Now, Academy only allows 4 boxs per person or 200 rounds max. per caliber(I pick up 3 boxs of 9mm and 5 boxs of 7.62X39). Wal-Mart only allows 2 boxs per person on 9mm. This is good news. At lease more people can get ammo now. I am stocked up and keep 500 rounds per caliber because I like to shoot every weekend. Now, if the 500 rounds of .380 shows up from a source I found in PA., I will be good to go for a while.

The only reason the news is reporting it now is that they can't ignore it anymore. It's just like 6 months from now when they won't be able to ignore the grassroots revolt that is brewing around the country.

I have 4 walmarts that I can drive by on my way home. I haven't seen a bulk pack of of federal or winchester 22 since February. I haven't seen 38 special since before Christmas and when I stopped at two of them last friday at lunch, all they had were Remington 22 (no thank you), 357 sig and misc. rifle and shotgun ammo. And yes I do roll my own, I just can't get bullets to reload with!

WHAT ABOUT WAR!
If the manufacturers cant keep up for the civilian market what would the military do in the event of and epic scale war?
Thanks

Mike, Didn't you hear? We lost. In the near future, even the police won't carry guns and all gas stations will be run by Citgo . . .

I already posted it on other forums, but this seems like a good place to share it again...

Have you seen the prices some of these guys are getting on the auction sites for those Federal bulk packs from Wal-Mart? Ridiculous!

So just for grins, I posted this: http://www.gunbroker.com/aucti...m.asp?Item=127366054

Look at how much I got so far and there are several days to go! My next problem will be what to do with all that money I make!

Scott

Scott,

I hear stamps are going up. You could get a couple.

Don't foget that you must ship the round via UPS Ground in a sturdy box marked ORM-D Catridges, Small Arms. You also cannot ship from the local UPS store and must make the extra drive to the UPS service center or schedule a pick up from home. Just want to make sure you don't endanger anyone with shoddy shipping practices . . .

The ammo shortage first showed up in 07 when many police depts could not get adequate training ammo. It has only gotten worse since. Check out the reloading and ammo forums for additional info.

I got lucky at a gun show this weekend, and found Remington Golden Sabre .45 ammo at a very reasonable price, $22.00 for a box of 25 rounds. I bought 3 boxes. They were selling larger quantities at even better prices.
I reload so I don't need alot of factory ammo.
.38 calibre ammo is the toughest to get.

I hit Walmart once or twice a wekk. Last week, I grabbed 3 boxes of Blazer 9MM for $9 a box. Grabbed all three, Winchester 100 round value packs are generally $18 a box of 100.

Grab it while you can. When I got my Ar back in 2000, I went on a ammo buying frenzy and bought sevral thousand rounds. I recall buying 1000 rounds of Remngton for $180. I don't shoot that often anymore, and have 1600 rounds of .223. it's gotten to the point that i don't shoot BECAUSE I don't want to blow off that precious ammo. I shot 100 rounds of 9Mm last week, and that will be my last shooting session with 9MM for 6 months.

I am mostly shooting my .22's now. I will only shoot my other guns whenever I can buy ammo for them, because I don't want to deplete the stock I have on hand. I think the situation is much more serious than most people realize, and I don't see it getting better anytime soon. I was at my local Wal-Mart last Friday and they had no centerfire ammo whatsoever...only a few boxes of .22's and shotgun shells, the rest of the shelves were empty.

It will probably get much worse before it gets better if it ever does. Here in the Kansas City area if you can find any 9mm or 40s at Walmart you better buy it cause it will be gone before you can blink an eye. I have not seen any 9mm at Wally World since before Christmas.

From the Winchester web site; I believe that eventually supply and demand will meet once again:

Yes ammunition is in short supply, but I bet the first quarter earnings are WONDERFUL for the manufactures of said products.

Our president should be nominated for the ammo and firearms salesman of the year.

Ammo is a little hard to find here too. Being persistant helps and reloading.

I was 16 at the time of the '94 awb. Was it this hard to find ammo then or is this a new development?

The only ammo I have found with "relative" ease is .357 mag and .40S&W at the shops I frequent. 9mm,45, and 10mm are nowhere to be seen

I do the same with Blazer 40 ammo and Walmart. Between stops at Walmart and Cabelas, I have 23 boxes of 40 cal ammo in my gun safe.

Went through 4 boxes this weekend while shooting up at our cabin.

OK, we all know that there is a shortage, but why?

I remember how the government pays farmers not to farm certain tracks of land every year...democrats take charge and all of a sudden ammo dries up...hmmmm. No gun control, just no ammo.

Also, ever think about one of the democratic super rich guys that gets the idea to "invest" in a major ammunition manufacturer, takes controlling interest, then shuts it down on behalf of the "cause".

Think about it!

You can't blame Obama for the ammo shortage. He did not cause it. It is the result of his election only because panicking gun owners are stocking up like mad. But it is not the result of any thing that he has done. And no, I did not vote for him.

Your are right, Obama has done nothing yet, its the anticipation. Just like the price of gas. If there is an anticipated hurricane brewing, gas goes up, if the media says there is a gas shortage, gas goes up. Obama's track record concerning gun control is not good and there is much anticipation. I belive it is not "if" but when. I hope it ia all for not but I don't think so.

I just received my Fiocci 9mm from ammoman. They had no problem sending a big order and the price was up only a little and no shipping. Their 40S&W is on backorder for 5 to 7 days. Georgia arms had plenty of 40. You just have to shop around. Check the websites everyday.
Try not to buy from the gougers on the online auctions, they will just make the situation worse.

P.S. firecap, Where are you from? I'm retired from S.FL. Retirement is wonderful!!

I hope so too! After checking my local WaliWorld here for the past 2 weeks every day yesterday they finally got 8 boxes of Blazer Brass .40(50 rounds) and 1 box of Remington JHP .40(100 count). I really hope this shortage is coming to an end but I guess time will only tell? Good luck to all of you in your search.

My dealer told me not to expect to find any significant quantity of quality ammunition in NJ until October or November. The range calendar at the Pistol Club I belong to in empty.

Atlanta walmarts are worse now than they have been. Even though an employee told me 3 weeks ago that things were getting better, I still haven't seen any new boxes of any caliber for the last week and a half. I predict it will last through the summer. My philosophy now is to buy it when I can get it because the taxes are only going to go up . . . this doesn't just apply to ammo. Run your air conditioning now while you can still afford the electricity bills.

The ammo shortage has been in Mass for months now. It is caused by the hoarding that most have practiced since obama (yes that is lower case because of what I think of the XXXXXXXX). I have friends that have literally bough 10 thousand plus rounds easy! Last time when Clinton got in the gun shortage lasted 18 months while ammo was low for 9 months or so.

EDITED-
CJfalco,

I was at Walmart earlier this evening and bought my two-box ration of .308s for my deer gun. I would have bought some 22 plinking ammo, but there was none. The only 22 they had were Stingers and shot shells.

In central PA, ammo can be found, just cheap ammo is scarce. The local Walmarts are always out of Blazer Brass and Win White Box in 40 S&W, but I can go to most local gun shops and buy a box of American Eagle of UMC for $19-$21 a box. I think the days of going to the range, and blowing through an entire case are over, but I am still able to find a box or two a week with persistence. It will be very interesting to see how this all turns out in the end.
