I'm trying to decide between the 135gr CorBon JHP and the Magtech 155gr JHP. What are others here carrying in your magazines for self defence use?

The current king of the hill SD ammo is Federal HST. This is the real deal and has better expansion, penetration, weight retention and jacket adhesion than the other premium SD ammunition.

This link shows how HST stacks up in tests funded by federal, but the testing was done by LE agencies.

HST... Accept no substitute:

I use this same ammo in my Ruger 9mm. I've been trying to find it but ammunitiontogo.com doesn't have it in 155gr at this time but they do have 180gr which I may settle for.

Normally have 180 gr. Hydra Shoks loaded in my 40. I also like the 155 gr. Silvertip. All of the above mentioned are more than adaquate.

Cheers,
Sam

I use the 135 grain CorBon. To me it's similiar to a 125 grain .357 in performance but it punches a bigger hole.

At the moment my 40ve has 135gr HSTs in it, and the 1911Sc has 230gr HSTs, I guess you could say I like the HST rounds.

I asked this question at the local gun store today and was recommended 155 grain Gold Dot JHPs.

On a related note, is it okay to use a round that has been chambered and removed once? I know doing that multiple times can cause bullet setback that can lead to overpressure incidents, but I wasn't sure whether it could be done once without issue.

Same here. Comparatively cheap and easy to find. They also work about as well as any other 180 JHP looking at Brassfetcher's data.

Just my .02: I feel that the best .40 round is a 155-165 GD slug running at higher velocity than the 180 gr. The 180 gr gets you up into the 10mm arena, and why not take advantage of the higher speed of the lighter bullets? I prefer the 155 gr GD put out by any of the makers who will get it moving along. Federal HST rounds seem quite good. I also like the 135 gr GD, but it seems that now we are getting down into the area of the various .357 cal rounds, of which the 357 Sig seems to be the best of all available. Instead of trying to make the 40 a slightly heavier 357 Sig we should take advantage of its greater sectional density and up the weight somewhat.
