I have run into a S&W semi auto that I cannot find any info on. It is a 5946, BAY prefix serial number, novak nite sights, rail, 9mm, 15 round magazine. It say's that it is for the RCMP, but is not labled on the firearm itself. Product code 608270. I have not had any luck finding out anything about this firearm, any one know anything about this? I will try to post pic's tomorrow.

They used them but I was not aware that theirs were any different than the one I was issued by my department. Either way the 5946 is a GREAT gun in any configuration. The only difference may be the factory removal of the magazine disconnect. While I don't carry mine anymore I always like to post how much I miss it! (although I did get to buy mine when we transitioned to fantastic plastic for 200.00!)

The issue RCMP is laser etched with RCMP-GRC. It will also still have the mag disconect. I guess it is possible it could have been one of the test firearms they used for evaluation prior to adoption, I doubt they were marked and were probably returned to S&W. I do believe they kept the Beretta's they tested for some reason.

It is not etched RMCP, and it does have the mag disconnect safety, the box is marked RCMP. Forgot to add that it is the Melonite finish, beautiful gun, looks brand new.

Does this gun have the rail under the dust cover for accessories? If so, is it molded into the frame or is it the rail that is riveted on?
I've been looking for one for some time, if you decide to pass on this gun I'd like to know more about it.
Thanks

The rail is riveted on, will try to post pic's later. They have it listed for $699.99, which I think is a little high, but not finding out much about the gun has made me interested. I did find out that this gun with the melonite finish was probably issued to the Canadian ERT squads.

I will find out from the RCMP armour's tomorrow if even the melonite finished are laser engraved RCMP-GRC. I have a suspicion they all are, but will try to verify.
You may want to post on the Canadian GUNNUTZ website, there are several RCMP members on it who have far more knowledge than me!

I was out of the office today, so I had a buddy check with the guy's at the RCMP range in Ottawa. As I suspected they are laser etched RCMP-GRC. I forgot to ask if they have accessory rails, but I don't think they do.

I think the melonite metal surface treatment is worth a premium. As to the markings on the RCMP pistols, don't forget the little horse logo!

RCMP 5946 Melonite
I believe that the Melonited 5946 pistols with rails were for the RCMP SERT or ERT. They do have the RCMP figure with guidon etched on the slide. The standard RCMP 5946s are stainless without the rail. I can post pictures if wanted.

Even tho this thread started 10 yrs ago, these are neat guns and wouldn't mind seeing your pics.

I have a 5946 that is dark colored. I'm not sure if it is Melonite or parkerizing. I has a re-import mark on it. I haven't looked it over in some time, but if I get a chance I'll look. I bought it years ago, and no one could ever give me any information on it. I would post here about it, and my posts would go unanswered.
When I got it, it was covered with skateboard tape. It also has fiber optic sights if I recall correctly.
