Will the complete slide assembly from either model interchange with the frame of the other? Are the frames the same? So, with a slide assembly and mag switch, could a gun be switched back and forth?

The 4506 and 1006 when they first started out were built on the same frame. In theory, swapping the complete slide uppers would work, but one thing you need to verify is whether or not there are any dimensional differences that took place between the revision (dash) numbers.
The 1006 and 4506 (no dash) are the same version, the 4506 continued to be improved after the 1006 was discontinued. The 4506 underwent a number of engineering changes... there are frames stamped with 4506, 4506-1 and there 4506-1's that have revisions (R3), and s&W did not see fit to stamp 4506-2 to any of those guns.
Whether or not any of the revisions included a change in frame rail dimensions is unknown to me.
If such a change did take place, then you would need to make sure that the frame of the gun being used is compatible with the version of the slide(s).
A 4506-1 slide may not be backwards compatible with a 4506 no dash or 1006 frame. And a 1006 or 4506 no dash slide my not be upwards compatible with a 4506-1 or later revision frame.
Maybe someone that is in the know better than me can comment about whether there is any slide rail differences existing between the revisions.
When you do switch a slide, make sure that you keep the slide recoil springs matched with the caliber. I'm pretty sure there is a diference between the one used for a 10mm and a .45acp.

There are magwell differances also. The ten is narrow and the bump on the front of their mags keep them from going in the 45. Anything can be done, it just comes down to who's writing the check.

Good point... just like the 9MM/40S&W 3rd gen pistols, the .40 S&W mag has a bump on the front for the same reason.

Hi Guys,
I know this thread is a bit dated, but in view of the shortage of parts availability, I think this question I am now posing is germane...
Does anyone know whether the firing pin and FP spring from the two are interchangeable? While 1006 parts appear to be totally unavailable, it does look like some parts for the 4506 are still available some places, and I need to get a 1006 FP and spring...desperately
Thanks
Mike

Yes, the 1006 & 4506 use the same firing pin spring (#101440000). Looks like it's used in over (40) different models.
Same for the firing pin (#067670000). Looks like it's used in (37) different models.

There are some early prototype 10mm magazines that will work in a 4506 frame, the thread below has some information on this:

BLUEDOT37 - Thank you for that tidbit - I have gotten the FP and FP spring, and all is well now - there is peace in the land
... any idea where I might be able to lay my hot little hands on a steel guide rod for either the 4505 or 1006?
TIA
