About 15 years ago I bought a NIB model 41 short barrel for $250 from someone needing money. (Yes, I feel guilty) I finally took it out shooting today and I had 1-2 rounds per magazine that failed to fire. It ejected the previously fired case and picked and chambered a new round from the magazine, but the hammer was not cocked or reset. I thought maybe the trigger overtravel screw was too tight and not allowing the trigger to reset. I backed off on it some and it seemed to help. Am I on the right track ????? Is there any way to check without going to the range and firing the gun

Well if the gun has been sitting for 15 years I'd start with a good cleaning, especially around the firing pin aera. Followe with a light oiling. One way I check rimfires is to pull a bullet and dump the powder, then see if they set off the priming compound.

handgunner356 has the right idea. A thorough cleaning and flushing out of the firing pin channel might cure the problem. However that might not help with the failure to cock when fired. Have you tried a different ammo? Also check out this site:

Thanks for the website link. It will be most helpful. A good oiling is probably in order, but the gun has less than 50 rounds through it. I don't believe the firing pin or firing pin channel is at fault, as when it fails to fire, the hammer has not cocked. A good lube may cure the problem.

As stated by others, the clean/lube will likely solve your issues. A good while back my problems of a few FTF per outing were taken care of by the use of CCI std. vel. ammo. Now the thing is finding it. Hopefully this will ease up soon.
