I found a NIB 6906 a few weeks back and have added a few more rounds through it. I had read how eveyone liked theirs and how accurate they were. So my first trip to the range was interesting to say the least. The first 25 rounds or so was not good, but I kept moving ammo through it. By the time I got 100 rounds trough it, it was like a different gun. After about three trips later and a total of around 300 rounds including some JHP the gun is so accurate it makes me look good. Really two questions here...1) how many total rounds do you think it takes to make it ready for carry and 2) what self defense ammo do you guys recomend. I am still fairly new to 9mm, I usually use a 357 or 45.

You have most likely hit your number of trouble free rounds now. My 6946 has at least 5k+ trouble free rounds and was a police gun so more like 10k+ rounds.

I don't get to hung up on this brand or that brand of JHPs so as long as they function in the gun and hit to point of aim you should be good. I like 115 grain Remingtons but any good quality ammo will serve you well.

I carry in my 6906 pmc starfire 124gr hp.its what my old police dept issued us so i just stuck with it.I was like you i read about how accurate the 6906 was and i had to get one.it is true they are right about the accuracy of them and i will never part with mine.

Just a suggestion:

Please consider using the 15rd mags of the 5906 (w/S&W mag.adapter) and the capacity of your 6906 will jump from 12+1 to 15+1.

I even like the "feel" of the 6906 w/the adapter over the standard magazines with the fingertip extensions.

Not often you can increase the capacity of your carry weapon approximately 25% as painlessly..

I prefer 115 grain "DoubleTap" Gold Dot jhps for my carry round, but I've never found a quality round any of my 6 3rd gen Smiths wouldn't accept 100%.

Thanks to all. I really like this gun. I had read and here on this forum about the 5906 mags. I found two 5906 mags from a local FFL. I went back to this forum the other night and found the article I was looking for and found the part # from S&W I needed to order. Got that squared away last Friday so hopefully in a couple of weeks the extenders should be here. I appreciate all of the good info on the Smiths. I don't buy anything new these days I just look around a see what people think they don't need to trade in then I pick 'em up. So far I have picked up a Smith Model's 66, 19, 649, 1911 Tactical and a 1911PD. I could have never picked these up new, thank goodness some other folks thought they need an AR15. Guess I've been out of touch too long... but my 80s version of the stainless 5906 is 14 + 1. I didn't shoot for two+ decades and now I am again and trying to catch up with new developments. What's the deal... is there a larger mag now for the 5906? Never heard of a 15 + 1.

FRom what I have read on this forum. The 14 round mags had a black follower, mags marked 14 rounds. Smith re-designed the followers to allow one "extra round" made the followers orange, mags marked 15 rounds. On my 659 the 14 and the 15 rnd mags fit flush. Plus..Mec Gar (sp?) make a nice 17 rounder that fits flush also.
