Had the same problem with a 1076. After closer inspection, noticed that one of the "ears/tabs" was broken off. Took to a local retired police armorer and he put a new one in (took about 10 minutes and minimal cost). Noticed that the new one appeared to be a updated version that did not have the two ears/tabs on it, instead having a bar across the top thereby creating a box of strength/pressure. Haven't had any problems since.

Should have clarified. That question was for the OP

This was a very useful thread. I recently picked up an unnoticeably used 4566TSW, that had the clicking issue. The previous owner had sent it back to S&W twice with no resolution. It took me less than 3 minutes to correct the tension. Thank you

It that "fixes" it, fine, but usually the spring has weakened or cracked and replacement is the only cure.

With all due respect, I find that very hard to believe that the factory didn't find or fix the problem. Twice I sent my 4506 to the factory for the clicking, twice it was fixed when I got it back. Most likely the factory fixed it and the spring just weakened again. This is a very well known issue.

You guys are the best. I've never fixed a firearm with a pencil eraser before. I've got that natural born genius feeling thing going on, that doesn't happen every day. Many thanks!

Cool!

Now go celebrate by dropping that pencil, eraser first, down the barrel of your skyward pointed (& unloaded) pistol, firing it & launching the pencil toward the heavens in thanks.

Too often, they're broken & just have to be replaced.
