My Nickel Model 59 has blued accents: trigger, slide release, safety, hammer and barrel.

All are showing signs of wear. I could probably get away with cold blue on the hammer and barrel, but the rest of the parts are very high gloss. It wouldn't look right.

I called S&W to ask them for a quote to refinish these to their lustrous original condition. They said they needed to see the parts before they could provide with a price. Furthermore, they wanted me to ship them the entire pistol, because they were worried they would lose the small parts (!)

As much as I would like to have S&W restore these parts, I think I should look elsewhere.

Any advice?

If you live near an industrial center, you can locate a shop that does industrial black oxide. It is identical to the hot tank gun "bluing" that factories use. Simply cleaning and hot tanking will give back the deep black color you want. If you want glossy, then detailed polishing is also needed. Toss in some common hand tools, and they will come back looking like new. It's not very expensive at all. You do need to generate an inventory list, and have the shop take responsibility, of course.

The best part of having a shop do only the small parts is that they are just that: PARTS and do not need to go through an FFL holder for the black oxide.

Wow, I never thought to think outside the "gunsmith" box.

Would the same shop be able to do polishing?

Since the parts are already polished, the black oxide merely colors the metal, leaving the original polished finish, only in black.

You will have to ask the shop if they take on the polishing. It's a matter of having a delicate touch on the buffing wheel, and being careful enough not to launch your small parts into orbit if snagged on the buffer. Your choice. Me, I would either polish before having them do ONLY the blacking, or specify that they do NOT polish the parts. The usual rules about loosing small parts apply. I would use some iron wire and hook up all the small parts for them, AND have them sign a receipt.
