I have come to the point where I am considering my first semi-automatic. I have shot a 9mm Glock and a .40 Glock. Also have shot the 9mm M&P as well as the Springfield XD9. I am very interested in a XDm as my first semi-auto. The one real reservation I have about this gun, however, is that the slide catch is not ambidextrious. Being a lefty, I would like a polymer pistol with a slide catch on the right hand side of the gun.

I know that the M&P has an ambidextrious slide catch, but are there others that I am missing? Also, I wonder if Springfield's custom shop would be able to install one on an XDm...

Any thoughts?

My polymer frame Ruger P95dc 9mm pistol came with a ambidextrous safety.

If you really like the Sprinfield, don't let the lack of an ambi slide stop keep you from buying the pistol. I use mine to lock the slide back to chamber a round, or to disassemble, but that's about it. I pretty much always slingshot the slide back into battery with my support hand to a round anymore, so it doesn't make any difference what side the lever is on.

BTW, I'm right handed, and have several Glocks and a new M&P 45. The M&P is a nice gun and has some features I like over the Glock. While it has the ambi slide lock lever, I haven't really paid much attention to it. Nevertheless, shootability is the most important aspect of a handgun, and if you really like the XD over the others you've mentioned, that's enough of a reason to buy it. As far as customs shots installing an ambi lever, there might be someone who will try it but it ain't going to do your warranty any good.
