They are great, best factory DAO out there IMO. I've owned a number of them. Right now the only one I have is a 4586, but it is by far my favorite example of a DAO S&W auto.

Landric,
Couldn't agree with you more, my "go to" autos are a pair of M4586's.... Don't have pics of them since they are working guns...
They got it right with the M4586...!

How many 457D's were made? I had heard about them being made up for Chicago Pd. I have been looking for one myself

That is a beautiful collection of DAO's.I was a double action only revolver shooter for many years who made the jump to Semi-Auto in May of 08 with a new in box CS9.I had a hard time going from DA to SA so I sent it back to smith for trigger work and a DAO conversion.I now have the sweetest trigger pull and the hammer is always cocked. It is my go to gun http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/...47709249pBUsDN God bless....Mike

Smithnut,

Your pictures take my breath away.

One question. My only exposure to Smith DAOs was a 6946. The trigger was so bad that I dumped it within a week. The best pistol shots I knew shook their heads after shooting it.

How does one clean up the trigger on a DAO and make it into a usable gun? Any recommendations on gunsmiths?

Thanks, keep the pics coming

The DAO triggers are usually pretty slick as they leave the factory. The only one I've encountered with poor triggers were police trade-ins or ones that have been messed with.

You can usually replace the hammer spring with one that is 1 or 2 lbs lighter, without affecting reliability. The PC used to do action jobs on the early models with forged parts, though I don't think the current staff is doing so. Recent models with MIM parts will slick up on their own with use.

jaysouth,
Honestly, the majority of DAO guns I've had the opportunity to inspect/play with have had fantastic actions. While I've heard of experiences like yours, it's a rare thing, not unexpected for a company putting out lots of product, but unusual in my opinion. All my DAO guns, with the exception of the two "one of a kind" PC models shown above, have factory original actions which are smooth and crisp. I've had more than a few folks ask me who worked the actions over, because they are so good. And, I never had the opportunity to pick and choose between several of a particular model, since these are generally hard to find on dealers shelves, now and back then.

As to how to clean up one, I really can't advise because I've never had a third gen gun apart for such an exercise. I'd suspect that one that was horribly bad would be best looked at by the factory, they do stand behind their products and the lifetime warranty should be a hedge against additional costs on your part.

Smithnut; You really do have a stash of a bit of everything!!! And, very nice too.

I've had limited contact with the DAO Smith & Wessons and since mine has been as a Pistolsmith it hasn't been a real good one. But, that being said I can say that ALL of the guns I had to work on had been 'toyed with' before they got to my Shop. I've met more than one LEO who thought because he carried a gun every day he 'knew' enough about it to take screwdriver to it!!! WRONG; but since I was making good money off lots of these fellows I didn't really mind them tinkering.

The only Smith big bore I still own is a Model 645 that began life with Fixed Sights, a Magazine Disconnector and a Hammer Drop Thumb Safety. It now sports a Rear Sight from a Model 41 and no longer has the Magazine Disconnector and is basically a Single Action with a Thumb Safety - even if it is backwards in operation from the Browning design. I have yet to have a malfunction with this gun and it is the second one of these I've owned and it is a replacement for an earlier Model 645 that had also functioned flawlessly.

My 'Show Partner' has begun collecting the Big Bore Smiths so I'm getting to see a few every once in a while.

I've had some contact with the new M&Ps through another friend and while they seem to be an outstanding replacement for the Sigma series I can't say I'm fond of the hole in the side. I've had the chance to shoot guns(the M&P autoloaders) with and without the hole and while I can't see any particular difference, well, I don't see the point.

4546 on top, 4556 on the bottom. In the middle is my favorite carry, a 4556 with a 4586 top end.

Nice DAO collection!

I really like S&W DAO pistols. I think they make one of the best carry guns around. I only have a 4586 (exceptionally accurate and smooth) and a 4053 right now. Been looking a while for a good 3953 locally, but I'm eyeing some decent 4046s right now at give away prices.

I recently ran across another 4053 and told a lady friend who was interested so she snagged it. S&W DAOs seem good choices for women looking for simple to operate effective defensive pistols. They seem to shoot them much better than most smaller, lighter J-frame revolvers too.

THE "CHICAGO STYLE"457D CAME IN 2 STYLES. THE FIRST WERE 457D WITH DOUBLE STRIKE CAPABILITY. I BELIEVE ONLY 6 OF THOSE WERE MADE. ALL WENT TO CPD RANGE STAFF. THE 2ND GROUP WERE SEVERAL HUNDRED UNITS OF SINGLE STRIKE TRIGGER SYSTEMS. THESE GUNS WERE ALL CARRIED HARD AND MANY ARE STILL IN FULL USE. JP

Great looking guns posted here guys!
I've got a 4053 on the way bought here in the classifieds. Glad to hear they are so highly regarded. I'm an old double action revolver shooter and don't care for DA/SA so figured I'd give a DAO autoloader a try. I'll post pics when she gets here.

I took my 5946 to the range yesterday and it performed magnificantly as always. My partner almost converted to the S&W side after shooting it. He likes it more than his DAO Sig 226, but not enough to justify the expense and hassle of changing service weapon. On a similar note he let me try his Glock 26 off duty. While I didn't totally hate it, my 3914DAO has absolutely nothing to fear. I couldn't be happier with my 5946/3914DAO carry duo.

No pics (yet) but I have a 5946 (my former duty gun), 4553 and a 4053 all of which I would not get rid of. I would like to convert my 3914 to DAO but I can't find anyone who knows what parts I would need (other than calling S&W).

Hey SmithNut,
I just picked up a 4046 police trade-in and was thinking about something like your 4006 PC DAO for IDPA. Can you recommend someone to contact about a build?

My 6946 was my first carry gun and still is one of my favorites. I will never sell it and now want to get its bigger brother 4053/6.

Here's my 4586. Great shooting gun. Just like a double action revolver but slimmer and easier to grip and control.

I just picked up a 5946 with squared trigger guard, it's serial prefix is TEY. I'd say it's an early one. Are the DAOs with squared guard rare? This is the only one I've seen.

I can't speak for everyone, but I'll give the "why" a try.

1- These guns are simple, no safeties to mess with
2- These guns are flat sided, no safeties to mess up the clean lines
3- Trigger pulls are consistent shot to shot
4- Some of us don't like using SA for defense guns, too easy to make a lot of noise when you aren't ready
5- Many of us, who learned early on to shoot a revolver properly (double action), find the transition to a DAO auto (not the Glock safe action variety, which I have trouble equating to DAO) simple and easy
And, with the S&W original Third Gen DAO design, the trigger pull is about 2/3's the overall travel compared to the first shot of a TDA gun, so, it's less hard to have an accidental discharge as in a SA gun, yet still provides the DA trigger stroke dynamics like a revolver, just a tad shorter travel overall.

Or, I could just say something along the lines of the bumper stickers I see on the back of Jeeps.... "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand.."

KurtC,
Congrats, I see you scored that last one. That makes three of the four made now residing with collectors on this board, I wonder where the fourth is?
Incidently, when the owner of the other one contacted S&W, they told him that only three were made... interesting.

Yes I admit I did not "get" the DAO thing until I bought one. The thinner snag-free slide is a huge plus. The simplicity of no thumb safety is nice. And the trigger action on these is sweet. So SmithNut's 5 points in the above post are right on for me. I've been searching for a single stack DAO for a while. Apparently they hold a price premium over double stack versions. Nice photos too, by the way.

SmithNut...No wonder we can't find any...you got them all!!
Very nice collection. I have one a 3914 DA/SA and love it. I've been looking for a single stack DAO...now I know why I can't seem to find one.

The pics I have are too big to post but I've got a 3913 and a pair of 3953's. One of the 3953's is my regular carry. I usually use the 3913 for a slight edge in accuracy I gain with a SA shot when I'm trying to put as many rounds as I can into one hole.

I'd expect with more practice with the DAO's I'd be able to shoot them just as well. (I'm sure they're capable of more accuracy than I can wring out of them!)

Wish I never came across this thread...adds to my wish list!

For now the collection is complete as it's going to get for a while. These are the 9mm DAO Smiths. I just brought the 5944 home tonight (Thank You! snw19_357!)

I now have no more DA/SA autos in the house. There's one Commander, (2) Glocks (which I consider DAO), and the remaining (7) are genuine DAOs. I'm sold on the concept. Bad photo will have to do for now:

SmithNut,

May I ask about the two DAO PC pistols? I have already changed my shirt and put on a bib...

Can someone tell me how the 4046 compairs in size to a 4586. I have the 4586 and am thinking about adding the 4046 to my tiny DOA collection to make it two. Of course as you all know, this is a sickness and it will not stop at two.

Your 4586 has a 4 1/4" barrel, only a 1/4" longer than the 4046 so the only significant size difference is the grip frame.

I found my 4586 gave better leverage on the trigger making it easier to get good accuracy so I traded my 4046 for a 4546. Aside from getting rid of the fat handle that trade was one of the few I've made that turned out to be smart financially which sort of balances watching police trade in 4586s sell for half the price I paid for a new one.

If anyone knows how many 4546s were made I'd appreciate that information.

Best regards,
Gil

So, the 4046 has a fatter grip? That would kinda turn me off a bit. The 4586 just seems to fit my hand about perfect. I found a nice 4046 with box, papers and 3 mags for $295 and thought it would be worth a try. I certanly don't need it but that has never stopped me from buying a gun. I was also tossing around the idea of a 3rd Gen 9mm. Again, I don't need it but might use either one for a CCW on occasion. The 4586 fits does about 60% of my carry needs now with a 642 taking up the rest.

I've owned about 1/2 dozen over the last 20 years. My research with serial numbers shows that they made 3 runs of 150-200 each.

I'm happy to read that I'm not the only one who likes the 4546. Thanks for the info.

Alde, $295 is a bargin. I paid $299 for my used 4046 about 7-10 years ago and was able to use it to good advantage as trading stock, but it did have a fat double stack handle that I found awkward.

Gil, Thanks for the great info. I may just get the 4046 to give a try for the price. At least 40 cal ammo is easier to get then 45 ACP right now. I reload but it's nice to see ammo on the shelf at the local store.
